Systems and methods for distributing traffic across cluster nodes

[0001] The present application generally relates to data communication networks. In particular, the present application relates to systems and methods for distributing traffic across nodes of a cluster of intermediary devices.

[0002] In cluster systems, traffic distribution by external routers or switches to the various nodes of the cluster may not be uniform or properly balanced, due to the lack of control by the cluster over distribution mechanisms provided by the switches or routers. Furthermore, in some embodiments, due to switch limitations including switch port unavailability or link aggregation (LAG) limitations, fewer than all of the cluster nodes may be connected to the upstream switch or router.

[0003] The present application is directed towards systems and methods for distributing traffic across nodes of a cluster of intermediary devices through distributed flow distribution (DFD). Upon receipt of network traffic, a cluster node, such as an intermediary computing device or appliance, may internally steer a portion of the traffic via an inter-node communications backplane to one or more other nodes in the cluster so that the load is equally handled by all of the nodes in the cluster. A cluster node may determine whether to process the traffic steered via the backplane by computing a hash of packet parameters of the network traffic. Hash keys may be selected such that uniformity is assured, and the key used in hash computation may be synchronized across all of the nodes so that only one node determines that it should process the particular packets or traffic flow. In one embodiment, given a hash value, a permutation of nodes is derived and the first active node in this permutation is selected as the flow processor for the traffic. This may reduce traffic steering errors or the need to calculate new hash keys and tables should a node join or leave the cluster and may result in detectable failure of at worst no more than 1/N connections, and with connection mirroring, failure of no connections.

[0004] In one aspect, the present disclosure is directed to a method for distributing network traffic across a cluster of intermediary devices. The method includes receiving, by a first intermediary device of a cluster comprising a plurality of intermediary devices, a network packet. The method further includes transmitting, by the first intermediary device, the network packet on a common data backplane of the cluster to each of the other intermediary devices of the cluster. The method also includes determining, by a second intermediary device of the cluster responsive to receipt of the network packet from the common data backplane of the cluster, not to process the network packet responsive to a hash of a tuple of the network packet. The method also includes determining, by a third intermediary device of the cluster responsive to receipt of the network packet from the common data backplane of the cluster, to process the network packet responsive to the hash of the tuple of the network packet.

    A. Network and Computing Environment

[0046] Prior to discussing the specifics of embodiments of the systems and methods of an appliance and/or client, it may be helpful to discuss the network and computing environments in which such embodiments may be deployed. Referring now to FIG. 1A, an embodiment of a network environment is depicted. In brief overview, the network environment comprises one or more clients 102a-102n (also generally referred to as local machine(s) 102, or client(s) 102) in communication with one or more servers 106a-106n (also generally referred to as server(s) 106, or remote machine(s) 106) via one or more networks 104, 104′ (generally referred to as network 104). In some embodiments, a client 102 communicates with a server 106 via an appliance 200.

The networks 104 and 104′ can be the same type of network or different types of networks. In some embodiments, clients 102 may be located at a branch office of a corporate enterprise communicating via a WAN connection over the network 104 to the servers 106 located at a corporate data center.

One or more appliances 200 may be located at any point in the network or network communications path between a client 102 and a server 106.

For example, the client 102 may reside in a remote office of a company, e.g., a branch office, and the server 106 may reside at a corporate data center. The client 102 comprises a client agent 120, and a computing environment 15. The computing environment 15 may execute or operate an application that accesses, processes or uses a data file. The computing environment 15, application and/or data file may be delivered via the appliance 200 and/or the server 106.

[0063] In some embodiments, the appliance 200 accelerates delivery of a computing environment 15, or any portion thereof, to a client 102. In one embodiment, the appliance 200 accelerates the delivery of the computing environment 15 by the application delivery system 190. For example, the embodiments described herein may be used to accelerate delivery of a streaming application and data file processable by the application from a central corporate data center to a remote user location, such as a branch office of the company. In another embodiment, the appliance 200 accelerates transport layer traffic between a client 102 and a server 106. The appliance 200 may provide acceleration techniques for accelerating any transport layer payload from a server 106 to a client 102, such as: 1) transport layer connection pooling, 2) transport layer connection multiplexing, 3) transport control protocol buffering, 4) compression and 5) caching. In some embodiments, the appliance 200 provides load balancing of servers 106 in responding to requests from clients 102. In other embodiments, the appliance 200 acts as a proxy or access server to provide access to the one or more servers 106. In another embodiment, the appliance 200 provides a secure virtual private network connection from a first network 104 of the client 102 to the second network 104′ of the server 106, such as an SSL VPN connection. It yet other embodiments, the appliance 200 provides application firewall security, control and management of the connection and communications between a client 102 and a server 106.

[0064] In some embodiments, the application delivery management system 190 provides application delivery techniques to deliver a computing environment to a desktop of a user, remote or otherwise, based on a plurality of execution methods and based on any authentication and authorization policies applied via a policy engine 195. With these techniques, a remote user may obtain a computing environment and access to server stored applications and data files from any network connected device 100. In one embodiment, the application delivery system 190 may reside or execute on a server 106. In one embodiment, the server 106 executing the application delivery system 190 may also store or provide the application and data file. In some embodiments, each of the application delivery system 190, the application, and data file may reside or be located on different servers. In yet another embodiment, any portion of the application delivery system 190 may reside, execute or be stored on or distributed to the appliance 200, or a plurality of appliances.

F. Systems and Methods for Providing a Distributed Cluster Architecture

Externally or to other devices, including servers and clients, in many embodiments, the cluster may be viewed as a single virtual appliance or computing device, albeit one with performance exceeding that of a typical individual appliance.

In a further embodiment, such geographically remote appliances may be joined by a dedicated network, such as a T1 or T3 point-to-point connection; a VPN; or any other type and form of network. Accordingly, although there may be additional communications latency compared to co-located appliances 200a-200b, there may be advantages in reliability in case of site power failures or communications outages, scalability, or other benefits. In some embodiments, latency issues may be reduced through geographic or network-based distribution of data flows. For example, although configured as an appliance cluster 600, communications from clients and servers at the corporate headquarters may be directed to the appliance 200b deployed at the site, load balancing may be weighted by location, or similar steps can be taken to mitigate any latency.

In some embodiments, return traffic may similarly flow from each of appliances 200b-200n via the first appliance 200a serving as the interface master. In other embodiments, return traffic from each of appliances 200b-200n may be transmitted directly to a network 104, 104′, or via an external router, switch, or other device. In some embodiments, appliances 200 of the appliance cluster not serving as an interface master may be referred to as interface slaves.

In many embodiments, an interface master for client data plane 602 and an interface master for server data plane 604 may be similarly configured, performing ECMP or LAG protocols as discussed above.

In other embodiments, back plane 606 may carry configuration messages, such as interface pause or reset commands; policy updates such as filtering or compression policies; status messages such as buffer status, throughput, or error messages; or any other type and form of inter-node communication. In some embodiments, RSS keys or hash keys may be shared by all nodes in the cluster, and may be communicated via back plane 606. For example, a first node or master node may select an RSS key, such as at startup or boot, and may distribute this key for use by other nodes. In some embodiments, back plane 606 may comprise a network between network interfaces of each appliance 200, and may comprise a router, switch, or other network device (not illustrated). Thus, in some embodiments and as discussed above, a router for client data plane 602 may be deployed between appliance cluster 600 and network 104, a router for server data plane 604 may be deployed between appliance cluster 600 and network 104′, and a router for back plane 606 may be deployed as part of appliance cluster 600. In other embodiments, one or more planes 602-606 may be combined, or a router or switch may be split into multiple LANs or VLANs to connect to different interfaces of appliances 200a-200n and serve multiple routing functions simultaneously, to reduce complexity or eliminate extra devices from the system.

In many embodiments, the flow distributor may provide the hash to the recipient appliance when forwarding the traffic. For example, in one embodiment in which traffic of one protocol is encapsulated within traffic of another protocol, such as lossy UDP traffic encapsulated via a lossless TCP header, the flow distributor may calculate the hash based on the headers of the encapsulated protocol (e.g. UDP headers) rather than the encapsulating protocol (e.g. TCP headers). Similarly, in some embodiments in which packets are encapsulated and encrypted or compressed, the flow distributor may calculate the hash based on the headers of the payload packet after decryption or decompression. In still other embodiments, nodes may have internal IP addresses, such as for configuration or administration purposes. Traffic to these IP addresses need not be hashed and distributed, but rather may be forwarded to the node owning the destination address. For example, an appliance may have a web server or other server running for configuration or administration purposes at an IP address of 1.2.3.4, and, in some embodiments, may register this address with the flow distributor as it's internal IP address. In other embodiments, the flow distributor may assign internal IP addresses to each node within the appliance cluster 600. Traffic arriving from external clients or servers, such as a workstation used by an administrator, directed to the internal IP address of the appliance (1.2.3.4) may be forwarded directly, without requiring hashing.

G. Systems and Methods for Distributing Network Traffic Across Cluster Nodes

[0244] In some embodiments of traffic distribution for a cluster, an equal cost multiple path (ECMP) router upstream from the cluster may direct traffic to individual nodes in the cluster according to a hash table. However, if a node leaves or rejoins the cluster, typically, the ECMP router will drop all connections across all nodes and rehash the flows, because the router will detect a different view in downstream devices. Additionally, in such embodiments, each node must be connected to the ECMP router, which may limit the size of the cluster.

[0245] The present application is directed towards systems and methods for distributing traffic across nodes of a cluster of intermediary devices through distributed flow distribution (DFD). Upon receipt of network traffic, a cluster node, such as an intermediary computing device or appliance, may internally steer a portion of the traffic via an inter-node communications backplane to one or more other nodes in the cluster so that the load is equally handled by all of the nodes in the cluster. A cluster node may determine whether to process the traffic steered via the backplane by computing a hash of packet parameters of the network traffic. Hash keys may be selected such that uniformity is assured, and the key used in hash computation may be synchronized across all of the nodes so that only one node determines that it should process the particular packets or traffic flow. In one embodiment, given a hash value, a permutation of nodes is derived and the first active node in this permutation is selected as the flow processor for the traffic. This may reduce traffic steering errors or the need to calculate new hash keys and tables should a node join or leave the cluster and may result in detectable failure of at worst, no more than 1/N connections, and with connection mirroring, failure of no connections.

In some embodiments, incoming traffic network packets 702 may arrive from a network 104 or 104′ via a client data plane 602 and/or a server data plane 604. For example, in one embodiment, one appliance may be the only appliance connected to a server or client data plane and process all incoming packets. In other embodiments, two appliances may both receive packets through packet mirroring for high availability. In still other embodiments, any number of appliances may be connected to either or both data planes.

In still other embodiments, hash calculator 704 may calculate a hash based on any combination of one or more fields within network layer headers, transport layer headers, or other header information including presentation or application layer headers. In some embodiments, hash calculator 704 may calculate the hash based on payload information, or header information of packets encapsulated in the payload, such as for TCP packets encapsulated with UDP headers for lossy transmission, or any other type and form of packet information. In many embodiments, hash calculator 704 may utilize a hash key 706 or seed for the hashing function. In some embodiments, hash calculator 704 may generate the seed and distribute the seed to other appliances, while in other embodiments, hash calculator 704 may receive the seed from another appliance, such as a master appliance. Accordingly, in many embodiments, every appliance 200a-200n may have an identical copy of the hash key 706. Hash keys 706 may be generated during startup of an appliance, startup of a master appliance in the cluster, or periodically, for example, once per hour, once per day, or once every n number of packets received. In many embodiments, the appliance generating the hash key 706 may verify that the key is a good key, resulting in balanced distribution of hashed packets across the hash index. For example, in one such embodiment, illustrated in the flow chart of FIG. 7B, an appliance may generate a hash key at step 720. The hash key may be generated based on a random number generator, pseudo-random number generator, or any other data source. At step 722, in some embodiments, the appliance may utilize a forward elimination algorithm to verify that the rank of a Toeplitz matrix generated via the hash key is equal to or greater than a divisor of a modulo operation applied to the results of the hash function. If so, then the hash key is a good key and may be distributed to other appliances at step 724. If not, a new key may be generated at step 720. In other embodiments, the appliance may utilize any other type of verification algorithm for the key.

In some embodiments, the hash index may have 2^16 values, as shown, while in other embodiments, the hash index may have any number of values, based on the hash algorithm used (although shown from 1-65536, in many embodiments, the index may start at 0). Each index value may have a corresponding identification of an appliance 762 for which packets within the flow are to be directed. For example, in one embodiments, packets from IP address and port 1.2.3.4:27 to IP address and port 5.6.7.8:28 may be hashed and result in an index value corresponding to appliance #3. All packets with such values may be steered to appliance #3 for processing, and other appliances may disregard the packets. Thus, all packets of a flow may be processed by a single appliance, without requiring extensive inter-appliance communication. In many embodiments, the list of appliances 762 may comprise a priority list of appliances to process the flow. For example, as above, packets may be hashed as corresponding to appliance #3. If appliance #3 is inactive for some reason, such as error or rebooting or is otherwise not part of the cluster, then the next appliance in the list 762 (e.g. appliance #4) may process the flow. Similarly, if appliance #4 is inactive, then appliance #1 may process the flow. Appliances may be notified when other appliances leave or rejoin the cluster and accordingly may take over or relinquish flow processing duties according to the priority list. In some embodiments where multiple consecutive appliances in the list are inactive (for example, if appliances 2 and 3 in the example list are inactive), the next appliance may assume the duties of multiple inactive appliances, potentially leading to overloading and congestion. In one such embodiment, responsive to a plurality of consecutive appliances in the list being active, the node table 708 may be regenerated, or otherwise modified to rebalance traffic loads. For example, in one embodiment, appliance identifiers for some index values may be modified (for example, rather than the appliance list comprising a consecutive sequence 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4, some values may be modified to divide duties of inactive appliances and rebalance traffic, such as 1-2-4-3-1-3-4-2). Thus, each flow may have a processing node and a unique successor node, and connection mirroring may be utilized with the successor node to provide high availability and reliability, resulting in no dropped connections even with failure of a node.

However, this may require additional routing headers to be utilized on the back plane. Additionally, this may require additional processing by the appliance to identify active or inactive appliances, step through the prioritization list, etc. Accordingly, in many other embodiments, the packet may be simply broadcast on the back plane 606 to all appliances. Each appliance may, upon receipt of the packet 702 and hash value 710, may look up the hash value 710 in its own copy of the node table 706 and determine if it is designated for processing of the packet. If so, the appliance may process the packet. If not, the appliance may discard the packet. Accordingly, only one appliance may process the flow, and further inter-appliance communication is not required. Such hash lookups may be very fast, as opposed to encapsulating and transmitting the packet directly to a specific appliance or performing other actions. Furthermore, in many embodiments, a plurality of appliances may receive the packet for processing with one or more appliances serving as backups for the primary processing appliance for the flow.
