Systems and methods for integration between application firewall and caching

[0001] The present application generally relates to data communication networks. In particular, the present application relates to systems and methods for integrated operation of cache management with application firewall processing of web content.

[0002] In certain conventional network systems, application firewalls are used to screen web content for potential security risks before passing the web content to a client, server or other networked device. As an example, a client on a network may request a web page hosted by a remote server. The client's server may relay the request to the remote server, and receive from the remote server an HTTP response representative of the requested page. An application firewall in operation at the client's server may process the HTTP response to determine whether it contains or lacks data which might be indicative of a security risk to the client. If the application firewall determines there is no security risk associate with the HTTP response, the client's server may cache the page and transmit it to the client.

[0003] The present application is directed towards improving performance of cache management and application firewall processing of web content exchanged in networked systems. In particular, systems and methods are described which provide for integrated operation of caching with an application firewall in networked systems. In certain embodiments, a 600% improvement in caching and firewall processing performance can be achieved with the systems and methods described herein. Such an improvement represents a significant increase in secure communication efficiency between networked devices.

[0004] In various embodiments, the system described herein comprises a caching system integrated with an application firewall. In certain embodiments, the system comprises an application firewall which generates metadata from an HTTP response received from a server in reply to a first request of a user for a page of web content. The metadata can identify information used by the application firewall to enforce a plurality of security rules. In certain embodiments, the application firewall provides the metadata for storage in a cache with the received HTTP response. In various embodiments, the intermediary device stores to a cache the HTTP response, and stores the metadata in the cache with the HTTP response. The intermediary device can also receive a second or subsequent request for the same page. The integrated system further comprises a cache manager which determines whether the HTTP response is stored in the cache, and provides a reference to the metadata in the cache for inclusion with session data associated with the second or subsequent request. The intermediary device can also store a reference to the metadata with session data associated with the first request and with session data associated with the second or subsequent request.

[0005] A method of integrating an application firewall with a cache in an intermediary device which can be used with the inventive system can comprise the intermediary device storing, to a cache an HTTP response received from a server to a first request of a user for a page. An application firewall configured on the intermediary device can generate metadata from the HTTP response, and the metadata can identify information to enforce a plurality of security rules by the application firewall. The method can also include storing by the intermediary device, the metadata in the cache with the HTTP response. The intermediary device, can receive a second request for the page. The cache manager can determine that the HTTP response is stored in the cache and provide a reference to the set of metadata in the cache for inclusion with session data associated with the second request. In various embodiments, the method further comprises storing, by the intermediary device, the reference to the metadata with a user session associated with the first request and with a user session associated with the second request.

In certain embodiments, the generating of metadata further comprises generating the metadata to identify one or more uniform resource locators from the HTTP response.     A. Network and Computing Environment

[0037] Prior to discussing the specifics of embodiments of the systems and methods of an appliance and/or client, it may be helpful to discuss the network and computing environments in which such embodiments may be deployed. Referring now to FIG. 1A, an embodiment of a network environment is depicted. In brief overview, the network environment comprises one or more clients 102a-102n (also generally referred to as local machine(s) 102, or client(s) 102) in communication with one or more servers 106a-106n (also generally referred to as server(s) 106, or remote machine(s) 106) via one or more networks 104, 104′ (generally referred to as network 104). In some embodiments, a client 102 communicates with a server 106 via an appliance 200.

[0038] Although FIG. 1A shows a network 104 and a network 104′ between the clients 102 and the servers 106, the clients 102 and the servers 106 may be on the same network 104. The networks 104 and 104′ can be the same type of network or different types of networks. In some embodiments, clients 102 may be located at a branch office of a corporate enterprise communicating via a WAN connection over the network 104 to the servers 106 located at a corporate data center.

A first appliance 200 may be deployed on a first network 104 and a second appliance 200′ on a second network 104′. For example a corporate enterprise may deploy a first appliance 200 at a branch office and a second appliance 200′ at a data center. In another embodiment, the first appliance 200 and second appliance 200′ are deployed on the same network 104 or network 104. For example, the client 102 may reside in a remote office of a company, e.g., a branch office, and the server 106 may reside at a corporate data center. The client 102 comprises a client agent 120, and a computing environment 15. The computing environment 15 may execute or operate an application that accesses, processes or uses a data file. The computing environment 15, application and/or data file may be delivered via the appliance 200 and/or the server 106.

[0054] In some embodiments, the appliance 200 accelerates delivery of a computing environment 15, or any portion thereof, to a client 102. In one embodiment, the appliance 200 accelerates the delivery of the computing environment 15 by the application delivery system 190. For example, the embodiments described herein may be used to accelerate delivery of a streaming application and data file processable by the application from a central corporate data center to a remote user location, such as a branch office of the company. In another embodiment, the appliance 200 accelerates transport layer traffic between a client 102 and a server 106. The appliance 200 may provide acceleration techniques for accelerating any transport layer payload from a server 106 to a client 102, such as: 1) transport layer connection pooling, 2) transport layer connection multiplexing, 3) transport control protocol buffering, 4) compression and 5) caching. In some embodiments, the appliance 200 provides load balancing of servers 106 in responding to requests from clients 102. In other embodiments, the appliance 200 acts as a proxy or access server to provide access to the one or more servers 106. In another embodiment, the appliance 200 provides a secure virtual private network connection from a first network 104 of the client 102 to the second network 104′ of the server 106, such as an SSL VPN connection. It yet other embodiments, the appliance 200 provides application firewall security, control and management of the connection and communications between a client 102 and a server 106.

[0055] In some embodiments, the application delivery management system 190 provides application delivery techniques to deliver a computing environment to a desktop of a user, remote or otherwise, based on a plurality of execution methods and based on any authentication and authorization policies applied via a policy engine 195. In yet another embodiment, any portion of the application delivery system 190 may reside, execute or be stored on or distributed to the appliance 200, or a plurality of appliances.

C. Client Agent

The software designed and constructed for a single CPU may be redesigned and/or rewritten to take advantage of a multi-threaded, parallel architecture or otherwise a multi-core architecture.

F. Systems and Methods for Integrating Caching and Application Firewall Processing

In various embodiments, the application firewall 290 includes advanced protection processes that use information about web content or an HTML page that has been transmitted to a particular user from a provider of the page. These protection processes can include, without being limited to, “URL closure,” “form consistency,” and “cookie consistency.” For URL closure, the application firewall can block access to URLs that are not on a predefined allowed list, and that have not been sent as a link in pages that have been returned from a server in response to a particular user's request. In some embodiments, the application firewall 290 compares the URL specified in a request by the user to a stored table of allowed URLs. If a match is found, the application firewall identifies that the request can be relayed to the server. If a match is not found, the application firewall identifies that the request cannot be relayed to the server. In some embodiments, the application firewall 290 scans a returned response to determine the inclusion of a link to the responding server. If a link is not found, the application firewall may reject the returned HTTP response for further processing. For form consistency, the application firewall 290 can compare a form returned by a user with that sent to a user to ensure that the forms are consistent or substantially of the same format. For cookie consistency, the application firewall 290 can compare one or more cookies returned by a user with those sent to the user to determine that the cookies have not been altered by the user. In various embodiments, an HTTP response received by the intermediary device 200 is processed 658 by the application firewall 290 for information needed to enforce protection processes carried out by the application firewall.

In lockless reference counting, each core of a multi-core processor maintains its own reference count for each HTTP response accessed by the core. The method 650 can further comprise maintaining, by each core of the multi-core system, a reference count for each cached object accessed by the core. If an individual core has a reference count which drops to zero, then the core can identify to one or more other cores that a reference count has dropped to zero. In some embodiments, each core with a reference count of zero for a particular HTTP response identifies the count to a control core 505A. If the control core has received similar identifications from all other cores, then the object is deleted from cache. In some embodiments, a first core with a reference count of zero for a particular HTTP response identifies the count to an adjacent core designated as its first neighbor. The neighbor core will pass the identification to its first neighbor only if it too has a zero reference count for the same HTTP response. The zero-count identification will be passed, or not passed, among all cores. If the first core receives back the identification from its second neighbor, i.e., it only other neighbor, within a selected time interval, e.g., 1 second, 0.5 second, 0.1 second, 0.05 second, 0.01 second, then the first core can instruct the cache manager 232 to delete the object from cache. In this manner, only when an individual core's count drops to zero does there need to be coordination with other processors in the system to determine if the object can be deleted.

[0258] Several advantages of the integrated cache/firewall system and methods can be appreciated from the foregoing description. In operation, when a request from a networked entity for particular web content is received by the intermediary device 200 and hits in the cache for a particular HTTP response 642B identifying the requested web content, the associated metadata 643B can be identified or “added” to the session data 641A associated with the entity requesting the web content. The metadata can be identified or “added” by adding a reference 644B to the session data 641A. Additionally, since reference data 644B, e.g., a pointer, is added to the user session as described above, it is not necessary to generate copies of metadata for each request which hits in the cache. Further, since space has been reserved in the HTTP response to insert a session cookie, the integrated cache/firewall system 600 can add a new session cookie, or a header that will be ignored, to the HTTP response 642B as needed by the system to monitor user sessions. Stated another way, the cached HTTP response can be changed as need by the application firewall 290. Further, modification of cache control headers by the application firewall allows the system 600 to use original cache control information received with the response to determine whether a page should be cached, and yet prevent downstream entities from caching the same page.
