Abstract

Access to digital content may be controlled by determining a digital content specification and associated authenticated rights locker access request, sending the authenticated rights locker access request and the digital content specification, and receiving a new authenticated rights locker access request and a Web page with clickable links in response to the sending, where at least one of the clickable links is associated with an authenticated digital content request. When an indication of a user selection of one of the clickable links is received, an authenticated digital content request associated with the user-selected clickable link is sent to a digital content repository. The digital content is received in response to the sending of the authenticated digital content request.

Field of the Invention

[0020] The present invention relates to the field of computer science. More particularly, the present invention relates to embedded content requests in a rights locker system for digital content access control.

Background of the Invention

[0021] FIG. 1 is a block diagram that illustrates a typical mechanism for digital content access control. A mobile phone operator 100 includes a portal 150 by which one or more mobile phones 125-140 communicate with one or more content producers 105-120 via a network 175 such as the Internet. Mobile phone operator 100 also includes a product catalog 145 that includes a description of digital content 155-170 stored by digital content producers 105-170. A particular digital content producer controls access to digital content stored by the digital content producer. Thus, authenticators 180-195 control access to digital content 155-170, respectively.

[0022] A user desiring access to digital content 155-170 stored by a digital content producer 105-120 uses a mobile phone 125-140 to issue an access request to a particular digital content producer 105-120. The digital content producer 105-120 authenticates the user making the request. The authentication typically includes prompting the user for a username and a password if the username and password is not included with the initial access request. Upon successful user authentication, the digital content producer 105-120 may grant access to the digital content 155-170. Alternatively, the digital content producer 105-120 may issue a token that may be presented at a later time and redeemed in exchange for access to the digital content.

[0023] Unfortunately, the bandwidth available for communications with digital content producers 105-120 is relatively limited. If the available bandwidth is exceeded, a user may be denied service. This problem is exacerbated as the number of users increases.

[0024] Accordingly, a need exists in the prior art for a digital content access control solution that requires relatively less communication with digital content producers. A further need exists for such a solution that is relatively secure. Yet another need exists for such a solution that is relatively scaleable.

Summary of the Invention

[0025] Access to digital content may be controlled by determining a digital content specification and associated authenticated rights locker access request, sending the authenticated rights locker access request and the digital content specification, and receiving a new authenticated rights locker access request and a Web page with clickable links in response to the sending, where at least one of the clickable links is associated with an authenticated digital content request. When an indication of a user selection of one of the clickable links is received, an authenticated digital content request associated with the user-selected clickable link is sent to a digital content repository. The digital content is received in response to the sending of the authenticated digital content request.

Those of ordinary skill in the art will realize that the following detailed description of the present invention is illustrative only and is not intended to be in any way limiting. Other embodiments of the present invention will readily suggest themselves to such skilled persons having the benefit of this disclosure. Reference will now be made in detail to implementations of the present invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The same reference indicators will be used throughout the drawings and the following detailed description to refer to the same or like parts.

A Web page may comprise a file written in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and stored on a Web server. A Web page may also refer to one or more images which appear as part of the page when it is displayed by a Web browser. The server may also generate one or more Web pages dynamically in response to a request, e.g. using a Common Gateway Interface (CGI) script. A HTML Web page may include one or more hypertext links (“clickable links”) that refer to one or more other Web pages or resources. A user viewing the Web page using a browser may access the one or more other Web pages or resources by clicking on or otherwise activating the corresponding hypertext link.

The future issuance of the authenticated rights locker access request may comprise embedding the authenticated rights locker access request in a Web cookie sent from the user device (5200, 5500, 5800, 6000, 6200) to the rights locker provider (5215, 5515, 5810, 6005, 6205).

Authenticated rights locker access requests 5255, 5572, 5815, 6060, and 6270 comprise a rights token encapsulated in the header portion of the corresponding HTTP Response messages from the rights locker provider (5215, 5515, 5810, 6005, 6205) to the user device (5200, 5500, 5800, 6000, 6200). The rights token stored in the HTTP Response message is for use in the future issuance of an authenticated rights locker access request. The future issuance of the authenticated rights locker access request may comprise encapsulating the authenticated rights locker access request in the header portion of an HTTP Request message from the user device (5200, 5500, 5800, 6000, 6200) to the rights locker provider (5215, 5515, 5810, 6005, 6205).

Claims

What is claimed is:

1. A method for digital content access control, comprising:

determining, on a user device, a digital content specification and associated authenticated rights locker access request wherein said associated authenticated rights locker access request was authenticated by a right locker provider for the rights locker;

sending, from said user device to said rights locker provider for the rights locker, said authenticated rights locker access request and said digital content specification;

receiving, on said user device from said rights locker provider, a new authenticated rights locker access request for the rights locker and a Web page with one or more clickable links in response to said sending, at least one of said one or more clickable links associated with an authenticated digital content request;

receiving, on said user device, an indication of a user selection of one of said one or more clickable links;

sending, from said user device, said new authenticated rights locker access request and an indication of the right associated with said one of said one or more clickable links to said rights locker provider; and

receiving, on said user device from a digital content repository, said digital content in response to said sending said new authenticated rights locker access request.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein

said method further comprises determining, on said user device, one or more delivery parameters, said one or more delivery parameters indicating where said digital content should be sent, a delivery mechanism, or both; and

said sending said authenticated rights locker access request and said digital content specification further comprises sending said one or more delivery parameters.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing at least part of said new authenticated rights locker access request in a bookmark on said user device.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said new authenticated rights locker access request is embedded in a Web cookie.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said new authenticated rights locker access request is encapsulated in a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Response message.

6. A method for digital content access control, comprising:

receiving, by a rights locker provider from a user device, a first authenticated rights locker access request and a digital content specification wherein said first authenticated rights locker access request was authenticated by said right locker provider for the rights locker;

validating, by said rights locker provider, said first authenticated rights locker access request; and

if said validating indicates said first authenticated rights locker access request is valid,

creating, by said rights locker provider, a Web page with one or more clickable links that comprise an authenticated digital content request for use in accessing digital content stored by a digital content repository;

sending, by said rights locker provider to said user device, a second authenticated rights locker access request for the rights locker and said Web page;

receiving, by said rights locker provider from said user device, and validating, by said rights locker provider, said second authenticated rights locker access request for the rights locker;

obtaining, by said rights locker provider, an authenticated digital content request if said second authenticated rights locker access request is valid; and

sending, by said rights locker provider, said authenticated digital content request to a digital content repository.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein at least part of said second authenticated rights locker access request is for storage in a bookmark on said user device.

8. The method of claim 6, further comprising embedding said second authenticated rights locker access request in a Web cookie before said sending.

9. The method of claim 6, further comprising encapsulating said second authenticated rights locker access request in a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Response message before said sending.

10. A program storage device readable by a machine, embodying a program of instructions executable by the machine to perform a method for digital content access control, the method comprising:

sending, from said user device to said rights locker provider for the rights locker, said authenticated rights locker access request and said digital content specification;

receiving, on said user device, an indication of a user selection of one of said one or more clickable links;

receiving, on said user device from a digital content repository, said digital content in response to said sending said new authenticated rights locker access request.

11. The program storage device of claim 10 wherein

said sending said authenticated rights locker access request and said digital content specification further comprises sending said one or more delivery parameters.

12. The program storage device of claim 10, said method further comprising storing at least part of said new authenticated rights locker access request in a bookmark on said user device.

13. The program storage device of claim 10 wherein said new authenticated rights locker access request is embedded in a Web cookie.

14. The program storage device of claim 10 wherein said new authenticated rights locker access request is encapsulated in a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Response message.

15. A program storage device readable by a machine, embodying a program of instructions executable by the machine to perform a method for digital content access control, the method comprising:

validating, by said rights locker provider, said first authenticated rights locker access request; and

if said validating indicates said first authenticated rights locker access request is valid,

sending, by said rights locker provider to said user device, a second authenticated rights locker access request for the rights locker and said Web page;

receiving, by said rights locker provider from said user device, and validating, by said rights locker provider, said second authenticated rights locker access request for the rights locker;

obtaining, by said rights locker provider, an authenticated digital content request if said second authenticated rights locker access request is valid; and

sending, by said rights locker provider, said authenticated digital content request to a digital content repository.

16. The program storage device of claim 15 wherein at least part of said second authenticated rights locker access request is for storage in a bookmark on said user device.

17. The program storage device of claim 15, further comprising embedding said second authenticated rights locker access request in a Web cookie before said sending.

18. The program storage device of claim 15, further comprising encapsulating said second authenticated rights locker access request in a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Response message before said sending.

19. An apparatus for digital content access control, comprising:

a memory for storing said digital content; and

a processor configured to:

determine, on a user device, a digital content specification and associated authenticated rights locker access request wherein said associated authenticated rights locker access request was authenticated by a right locker provider for the rights locker;

send, from said user device to said rights locker provider for the rights locker, said authenticated rights locker access request and said digital content specification;

receive, on said user device from said rights locker provider, a new authenticated rights locker access request for the rights locker and a Web page with one or more clickable links in response to said sending, at least one of said one or more clickable links associated with an authenticated digital content request;

receive, on said user device, an indication of a user selection of one of said one or more clickable links;

send, from said user device, said new authenticated rights locker access request and an indication of the right associated with said one of said one or more clickable links to said rights locker provider; and

receive, on said user device from a digital content repository, said digital content in response to said sending said new authenticated rights locker access request.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein said processor is further configured to:

determine, on said user device, one or more delivery parameters, said one or more delivery parameters indicating where said digital content should be sent, a delivery mechanism, or both; and

said sending said authenticated rights locker access request and said digital content specification further comprises sending said one or more delivery parameters.

21. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein said apparatus comprises a smart card.

22. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein said smart card comprises a Java Card™ technology-enabled smart card.

23. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein said smart card comprises a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology-enabled smart card.

24. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein said smart card comprises a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card.

25. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein said smart card comprises a WIM (Wireless Interface Module).

26. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein said smart card comprises a USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module).

27. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein said smart card comprises a UIM (User Identity Module).

32. An apparatus for digital content access control, comprising:

a memory for storing one or more rights lockers that describe digital content access rights; and

a processor configured to:

receive, by a rights locker provider from a user device, a first authenticated rights locker access request and a digital content specification wherein said first authenticated rights locker access request was authenticated by said right locker provider for the rights locker;

validate, by said rights locker provider, said first authenticated rights locker access request; and

if said validating indicates said first authenticated rights locker access request is valid,

create, by said rights locker provider, a Web page with one or more clickable links that comprise an authenticated digital content request for use in accessing digital content stored by a digital content repository;

send, by said rights locker provider to said user device, a second authenticated rights locker access request for the rights locker and said Web page;

receive, by said rights locker provider from said user device, and validating, by said rights locker provider, said second authenticated rights locker access request for the rights locker;

obtain, by said rights locker provider, an authenticated digital content request if said second authenticated rights locker access request is valid; and

send, by said rights locker provider, said authenticated digital content request to a digital content repository.

33. The apparatus of claim 32 wherein at least part of said second authenticated rights locker access request is for storage in a bookmark on said user device.

34. The apparatus of claim 32 wherein said processor is further configured to embed said second authenticated rights locker access request in a Web cookie before said sending.

35. The apparatus of claim 32 wherein said processor is further configured to encapsulate said second authenticated rights locker access request in a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Response message before said sending.
