Abstract
A system and method for the creation and automatic deployment of personalized, dynamic and interactive voice services, including information derived from on-line analytical processing (OLAP) systems and other data repositories is disclosed. In particular, the system and method include the ability to deploy voice services through a digital sound file. The system and method access personalized information and generate personalized markup documents from the personalized information. The personalized markup document is used to generate a sound file that is made available to a subscriber of the voice service, for example, through an e-mail or by posting to a web site.

Field of the Invention
[0003] This invention relates to a system and method for creation and automatic deployment of personalized, dynamic and interactive voice services, including information derived from on-line analytical processing (OLAP) systems, where the system and method includes the ability to deploy voice services through a digital sound file.
Background of the Invention
[0004] Although various user interfaces have been developed to enable users to access the content of data warehouses (for example, OLAP systems), through server systems, many such systems experience significant drawbacks. For example, in some situations a user may not have access to the computer software necessary to access the data warehouse (e.g., a traveling business person), or may not have time to sit and read all the retrieved information. In addition, persons with visual impairments may not be able to read the retrieved information.
[0005] These and other drawbacks exist with current OLAP interface systems.
Summary of the Invention
[0006] An object of the invention is to overcome these and other drawbacks in existing systems.
[0007] According to one embodiment, the invention provides a system and method for the creation and automatic deployment of personalized, dynamic and interactive voice services, including information derived from on-line analytical processing (OLAP) systems and other data repositories, where the system and method includes the ability to deploy voice services through a digital sound file. Accordingly, the system does not require constant access to a terminal device and enables storage of content. Furthermore, by delivering information through voice services, it is not necessary for the recipient to read the retrieved information.
[0008] Delivery of voice service information through a digital sound file also enables enhancements of the voice service. For example, other sound files, sound effects, music or other enhancements may be incorporated, from various sources, into the sound file. In this fashion, the relay of information to the user may be made more enjoyable for the user.
[0009] Many parameters or style properties of the sound file recording/delivery may be customized according to a user's desire. For example, sound file format, type of message delivery, maximum file size and other features may be pre-selected by the user.
[0010] One embodiment of the invention relates to a system and method for creation and automatic deployment of personalized, dynamic and interactive voice services, including information derived from on-line analytical processing (OLAP) systems and other data repositories. The system and method enables the ability to capture user selections to facilitate closed-loop transaction processing and processing of other requests. One aspect of the invention relates to an interactive voice broadcasting (IVB) system and method that enables analytical reporting and advanced transactional services via the telephone or other voice-enabled terminal device. One advantage of the invention is that a voice service may leverage the power of OLAP or other data repository systems and provide critical information to the user, in a timely fashion, by phone. Another advantage of this method and system is that it provides a user with the opportunity to immediately act upon information received during an IVB.
[0011] A voice service is created and can have many users subscribed to the voice service. Each user can specify personal preferences for the content and presentation of the contents for a voice service. The specification of the elements of a voice service may be done using a set of interfaces (such as GUIs) that take the form of a voice service wizard.
[0012] A voice service includes one or more Dialog elements. Dialog elements may include one or more of Speech elements, Input elements and Error elements. An Input element may include a Prompt element and/or an Option element. An Input element enables the system to request input from the user, capture the input and direct the call flow based on the user's input. An Option element associates a key (e.g, on a telephone touch pad dial) with a destination Dialog that is executed when that number is pressed by a user during an interactive voice broadcast. A Prompt requests a user to enter numeric or other information. An Input element may enable a user to request, during an IVB, a transaction, a service or other requests. The term transactions, services and requests are to be interpreted broadly.
[0013] According to one embodiment, the user's responses to Input elements are stored during an IVB and, during or after the voice broadcast, the stored information is processed by the system or is passed to another system or application for processing. The transaction (or other request) processing can be accomplished either in real-time, during the voice broadcast, or after the IVB is completed. The results or confirmation of a transaction or other request can be provided to the user during the call or subsequently.
[0014] Once a voice service is created, the system monitors predetermined conditions to determine when the voice service should be executed. Each voice service is executed when one or more predetermined conditions are met as specified during creation of the voice service. For example, a voice service may be executed according to a predetermined schedule (time-based) or based on a triggering event (e.g., one or more conditions are met based on the output of an OLAP or other report).
[0015] When the predetermined condition is satisfied, the voice service is executed. Executing a voice service includes the steps of generating the content specified by the voice service and the user preferences. Some users may have identical personalization options and, thus, a single call structure may be generated for a group of users with identical personalization options. The content of the voice service includes the information that is to be delivered to users of that voice service, and the Input to be requested from the user, among other things. The content may include, for example, static text messages, dynamic content (e.g., text based on information output from an OLAP report, other database or other sources) or blended text (e.g., static text combined with dynamic content).
[0016] This and other content along with a user's personalization preferences are formatted in an Active Voice Page (AVP). An AVP contains the call structure and data, voice style parameters for the user and personal identification information designated for the user. The AVP contains data at various hierarchical levels that are defined by the Dialog elements defined for each voice service. The active voice pages are used to help govern the interaction between the call server and the user during an IVB. According to one embodiment, the content is formatted, into an AVP using XSL stylesheets so the AVP is in an XML-based language. According to one embodiment, the XML-based language used is a novel language referred to as TML (discussed below). The AVP is sent to a call server along with style properties for each user. The style properties of a user help determine the behavior of the call server during an IVB. A unique AVP is generated for each user scheduled to receive a voice service.
[0017] When a user is called by the call server, information is passed through a text-to-speech (T-T-S) engine and delivered to the user through a voice-enabled terminal device. Preferably, the structure of each call is dynamic, driven by current data values and is personalized based on a user profile established during subscription to a voice service. During a typical IVB, a synthesized, natural sounding voice greets the recipient by name, identifies itself, provides information relevant to the user and enables a user to provide input back to the system.
[0018] An IVB is a voice-enabled interaction with a user having a dynamic structure controlled by the AVP for the particular user. The IVB may be delivered using real-time, on-the-fly speech generation. In addition to on-the-fly speech generation, some embodiments of the invention may incorporate prerecorded sound files into an IVB. Switching between the T-T-S engine and prerecorded sound files may also be accomplished on-the-fly. During an IVB, information is exchanged between the call server and a user according to the AVP. The system executes dialogs by reading messages to the user and, eliciting input from the user. For example, the user may press buttons on a telephone touch pad dial to select an option or to provide numeric or alphanumeric input. Each response provided by a user may transfer control of the IVB to a different part of the AVP.
[0019] During or after the IVB, the user's responses may be processed by the system or other applications. The AVP may contain pointers to other applications and embedded statements such that when a user exercises an option, the system performs a requested operation and returns the results to the user during the IVB. For example, by exercising an option, a user may request that a real-time database query be performed. When the user selects such an option, control is shifted to a portion of the AVP that contains an embedded SQL statement that is made against a database.
[0020] When a user has worked through selected dialogs of the AVP, the IVB is terminated. That is, a user likely will not work through all of the available dialogs during an IVB. Rather, the user's inputs and option selections determine which the available dialogs are encountered during any given IVB.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments
[0038] In some scenarios it is convenient for the user to be able to receive the voice service information in a digital sound file format. For example, if the user cannot access a phone, or if the user prefers to have a retrievable record of the information conveyed during an IVB, it may be preferable to receive an audible sound file. Accordingly, some embodiments of the invention provide the capability to generate a digital sound file that is delivered to the user in a customizable, predetermined format. For example, users may elect to receive an electronic mail (e-mail) message, containing an attached sound file with the IVB information contained therein. In this manner, the user may be provided with a digital file containing an audible record of information received during an IVB. This file may be accessed, stored, replayed, or otherwise processed according to the desires of the user.
[0039] One embodiment of the present invention may implement a voice service that is delivered to the user as a digital sound file. According to another embodiment, and as described above, the sound file output may serve as a redundant or backup delivery format, or it may serve as a primary choice of voice service delivery. In either case, the sound file delivery option is herein referred to as a voice service.
[0040] One embodiment of a method to carry out delivery of a voice service using personalized sound files is described with reference to FIG. 9. In step 900, an AVP is prepared. As explained below in conjunction with the system of FIGS. 1-8, an AVP governs the interaction between a user and the voice service system during voice service delivery. An AVP is generated when a voice service is scheduled for delivery—for example, because a predetermined time has been reached or a predetermined condition has been satisfied. The AVP may also be used to deliver content.
[0041] A determination is made whether the user has selected sound file delivery of their voice service (step 910). If sound file delivery has not been selected, the system proceeds to step 920 and delivers the voice service information using an IVB as described below in conjunction with FIGS. 1-8. According to another embodiment, a user may chose delivery using through an IVB and a sound file as a redundancy measure.
[0042] According to one embodiment, a user selecting sound file delivery selects additional style properties for personalizing the voice service. These style properties are applied at an appropriate time and used to personalize the over-air broadcast. Style properties may include such factors as: preferred format of sound file (e.g., “.wav” file, Real-Audio™ file, MP3™ file, digital audio broadcast (DAB) files, etc.), type of device receiving the sound file, type of connection that device uses, maximum size of sound file that user will accept (e.g., 2 Mbytes, 20 Mbytes, unlimited size, etc.), preferred user introductory greeting (e.g., “Hello Joe,” “Hello Mr. Smith,” etc.) and other factors.
[0043] According to one embodiment, these style properties are applied after decision step 910. FIG. 9 indicates that personalization occurs in a single step 930. According to another embodiment, personalization may occur at many different places in assembling a sound file for voice service delivery.
[0044] According to one embodiment, style properties are applied as they become relevant. For example, style properties may be retrieved individually, or in a piecemeal fashion, as the factor becomes relevant to the soundcast. Thus, for example, factors such as selecting sound file format, or preferred greeting may be retrieved prior to generating the sound file and factors such as retrieving delivery address may be retrieved at a time when the system is prepared to deliver the sound file. Other embodiments are possible.

According to one embodiment, the sound file comprises a record of an IVB that takes place between the system and a user in conjunction with the system and method explained below in FIGS. 1-8. According to this embodiment, the sound file is generated from the output of text-to-speech engine 1814. According to another embodiment, a sound file is generated automatically from a AVP without calling a user. In this embodiment, the sound file is also generated using the output of text-to-speech engine 1814. The sound file may be generated by any suitable digital recorder in a manner that is known.

Additional files may comprise other sound files, visual files (e.g., movies, graphics, pictures, bitmaps, etc.), text files, or other files. For example, if a user has subscribed to receive a voice service comprising a report of the result of favorite sports team game, the voices service may include, along with the generated sound file, another sound file comprising a post-game interview with a player, a recording of an announcer's call of a key scoring play (e.g., “It's a long fly ball, deep to center field . . . ”), the sports team theme music, or other sound file. In addition, some embodiments may include a video clip “highlight” or other accompanying graphics. For example, a movie of a touchdown pass in a football game, a weather map, a stock price graph, or other visual enhancement may be included. These other files may be integrated with the generated sound file to provide a seamless presentation. The addition of these other files may be selected at the user's option as indicated by the dashed line in FIG. 9. In some embodiments, the addition of other files may be one of the style properties determined at step 930.
[0047] According to one embodiment, sound files are integrated with the generated sound files to provide a seamless presentation. In the embodiment where the system operates in conjunction with the system of FIGS. 1-8, sound files may be integrated through the AVP. That is, the AVP comprises a TML file including at least, dialog elements, input elements prompt elements, and option elements as explained in detail below. According to one embodiment, a sound file may be integrated by including a pointer in a dialog that is used to access the sound file from memory. According to this embodiment, a single sound file is generated that includes the sound files to be added.

Sound file initiation module 1000 may enable the system to resort to a soundcast in those situations where sound file delivery is requested. For example, sound file delivery decision step 910 (e.g., FIG. 9) may be enabled by initiation module 1000. Server 18 may also comprise a sound file style properties retrieval module 1010. According to one embodiment, style properties retrieval module 1010 enables the retrieval of the predetermined features relevant to the creation of the soundcast.

For example, subscribers may be called by the system, and have content delivered audibly over the telephone or other voice-enabled terminal device. During the IVB, information may be exchanged between the system and a subscriber. The system conveys content to the subscriber and, the subscriber may respond by pressing one or more buttons on a telephone touch pad dial (or other input mechanism) to hear more information, to exercise options, or to provide other responses. This interaction shapes the structure of a basic exchange between the system and the subscriber. During or after the call is terminated, the subscriber's responses may be stored and processed (e.g., by other applications).
[0057] According to one embodiment of the present invention, a method for automatic, interactive, real-time, voice transmission of OLAP output to one or more subscribers is provided. FIG. 1adepicts a flow chart of a method for automatic, interactive, real-time, voice transmission of OLAP output according to one embodiment. The method begins in step 110 with the creation of a voice service (e.g., by a system administrator or user). A voice service is created using, for example, a voice service wizard which may comprise a series of interfaces. One embodiment of a method for creating a voice service is explained in more detail below in conjunction with FIG. 1b.One embodiment of a voice service wizard is explained below in conjunction with FIG. 3b.
[0058] After a voice service is created, users may subscribe or be subscribed to the voice service (step 120), for example, by using a subscription interface. According to one embodiment, users may subscribe to an existing voice service over the telephone or by web-based subscription. A user may also be subscribed programmatically. In other embodiments, a user may subscribe to a voice service via electronic mail. Not every voice service created in step 110 is available for subscription. More specifically, according to another embodiment, only a user with appropriate access, such as the creator of the service, is allowed to subscribe himself or others to a service. Such a security feature may be set when the voice service is created.
[0059] In step 130, a scheduling condition or other predetermined condition for the voice services is monitored to determine when they are to be executed. That is, when a voice service is created or subscribed to, the creator or user specifies when the voice service is to be executed. A user may schedule a voice service to execute according to the date, the time of day, the day of the week, etc. and thus, the scheduling condition will be a date, a time, or a day of the week, either one time or on a recurring basis. In the case of an alert service, discussed in more detail below, the scheduling condition will depend on satisfaction of one or more conditions. According to one embodiment, the condition(s) to be satisfied is an additional scheduling condition. According to another embodiment, to another embodiment, a service may be executed “on command” either through an administrator or programmatically through an API. Scheduling of voice services is discussed in more detail below.

[0101] According to one embodiment, a voice service is constructed using service wizard. A voice service is constructed using several basic building blocks, or elements, to organize the content and structure of a call. According to one embodiment, the building blocks of a voice service comprise elements of a markup language. According to one particular embodiment, elements of a novel markup language based on XML (TML) are used to construct voice services. Before explaining how a telecast is constructed, it will be helpful to define these elements.
[0102] The DIALOG element is used to define a unit of interaction between the user and the system and it typically contains one or more of the other elements. A DIALOG can not be contained in another element.

For example, a PROMPT element may request that a user enter, e.g., the name of a business. In response the user speaks the name of a business. That spoken name is then resolved against predetermined standards to arrive at the input. Word spotting and slot filling may also be used in conjunction with such a PROMPT to determine the user input. For example, a PROMPT may request that the user speak a date and time, e.g., to choose an airline flight or to make a restaurant reservation. The user's spoken response may be resolved against known date and time formats to determine the input. According to another embodiment, a PROMPT is used to request input using natural language. For instance, in conjunction with a voice service to be used to make travel plans, instead of having separate PROMPT elements request input for flight arrival, departure dates and locations, a single natural language PROMPT may ask, “Please state your travel plan.” In response, the user states ‘I'd like to go from Washington DC to New York city on the 3rdof January and return on the 3rdof February. This request would be processed using speech recognition and pattern matching technology to derive the user's input.
[0108] The ERROR element is used to define the behavior of the system if a user makes an invalid response such as touching a number that has not been associated with an OPTION element, or entering input that does not meet the criteria of a PROMPT element. A SYS-ERROR element defines a handler for certain events, such as expiration of the waiting time for a user response.

According to one embodiment, the active voice page comprises an XML-based document that includes embedded, generic requests, e.g., a request for a transaction, or a request for additional information (a database query). Moreover, although these services are described as distinct modules, their functionality could be combined and provided in a single module.

According to this embodiment, voice prints for each user of the voice service system are stored as identifiers. delivering the personalized sound files to the one or more individuals.

means for customizing the personalized sound files by presenting the one or more individuals with a plurality of style properties comprising options pertaining to enhancements to the personalized sound files to be used in generating the personalized sound files, registering style property selections from the one or more individuals, and generating the personalized sound files in accordance with the registered style property selections; and
means for delivering the personalized sound files to the one or more individuals.
14. The system of claim 13 wherein the means for accessing personalized information comprises an on-line analytical processing system.
15. The system of claim 13 wherein the means for generating personalized markup documents comprises a server for generating the personalized markup documents from the personalized information.
16. The system of claim 13 further comprising:
a markup parsing engine for translating the personalized markup documents; and,
a text to speech engine for generating a speech output from the translated personalized markup documents.
17. The system of claim 13, wherein the sound file generator further comprises a sound file format module that formats the personalized sound files into a digital sound file format.
18. The system of claim 17, wherein the format is a .wav file format.
19. The system of claim 13 wherein the sound file distribution module further comprises an electronic mail delivery module that delivers an electronic mail message containing the personalized sound files to the one or more individuals.
