[0003] 1. Field of the Invention

[0004] The invention relates to a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer, more specifically to a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer for radiating heat from a body portion beneath a hinge shaft of an openable/closable cover for a main body.

[0005] 2. Description of the Related Art

[0006] Recently, personal computers have gradually been miniaturized to a portable notebook size as shown in FIGS. 20A and 20B. This is constituted by a main body 1 having a housing 4 with a keyboard thereon (not shown) and accommodating therefor a CPU 2, a HDD 3, a PC card 4 and so on therein, a display device 6, and a hinge for coupling the display device 6 to the main body 1 so that the display device 6 forms an openable/closable cover for the housing 5. The keyboard has a plurality of keys having keytops arranged in a matrix manner with a small gap between adjacent keys. Information input from the keyboard is processed by CPU 2 in the main body and displayed on the display device 6.

[0007] The notebook type computer described above generates heat from high temperature elements built into the main body (for example, a CPU), which heat must be dissipated therefrom. In the prior art, a heat dissipation plate 7 made of aluminum or copper is attached to the high temperature element to radiate the heat in the interior of the computer. According to the prior art heat dissipation structure described above, it is possible to equalize the temperature in the interior of the computer, but the temperature may rise as a whole to exceed an allowable limit of other elements having a lower resistance to heat (such as an HDD, a PC card, an FDD, a CD-ROM or the like).

[0008] The present invention has been made to solve the above problem inherent in the prior art by providing a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer capable of effectively carrying out the heat dissipation from a high temperature element (such as a CPU).

[0009] Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer which is capable of effectively dissipating heat from a high temperature element (such as a CPU).

[0010] To achieve the above object, the present invention provides a heat dissipation structure, for a notebook type computer, comprising: a main body including electrical elements in a housing; a display device; a hinge shaft for coupling the main body with the display device, said hinge shaft being arranged above the main body at a distance therefrom; and a heat dissipation device provided in the main body adjacent to the hinge shaft.

[0011] According to one aspect of the present invention, a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer is provided, comprising a main body, a display device and a hinge shaft for coupling the main body with the display device; said hinge shaft being arranged above the main body at a distance therefrom, a heat dissipation plate of a T or L-shape is provided in the main body. According to another aspect of the present invention, a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer is provided, comprising a main body, a display device and a hinge shaft for coupling the main body with the display device; said hinge shaft being arranged above the main body at a distance therefrom, a heat dissipation plate is provided in the main body, and an opening is provided in a housing wall at a position above a heat dissipationsection of the heat dissipation plate. Also, the opening may be provided in the housing wall at a position beneath at least one end of the heat dissipation section of the heat dissipation plate.

[0014] According to another aspect of the present invention, a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer is provided, comprising a main body, a display device and a hinge shaft for coupling the main body with the display device; said hinge shaft being arranged above the main body at a distance therefrom, a duct-shaped tubular heat dissipation section is provided in the main body, wherein an inclined lower opening of the duct is used as an intake port for sucking air and an inclined upper opening of thereof is used as an exhaust port. An exhaust fan may be provided in the tubular heat dissipation section. Also, the duct-shaped tubular heat dissipation section may be cylindrical. A louver may be provided midway of the tubular heat dissipation section, for sucking part of the air in the housing and exhausting the same therefrom. A baffle may be provided for partitioning the interior of the tubular heat dissipation section into an outer air flow-in chamber and an inner air flow-in chamber. The tubular heat dissipation section may be of a T-shaped profile.

[0015] According to another aspect of the present invention, a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer is provided, comprising a main body, a display device and a hinge shaft for coupling the main body with the display device; said hinge shaft being arranged above the main body at a distance therefrom, a heat dissipation plate partly formed of a metal piece is provided in the main body, and one end of the metal piece is connected to a second heat dissipation plate provided in a lower part of a display-mounting portion or a rear surface thereof. An outer surface of the metal piece may be covered with a resin. According to another aspect of the present invention, a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer is provided, comprising a main body, a display device and a hinge shaft for coupling the main body with the display device; said hinge shaft beingarranged above the main body at a distance therefrom, a heat dissipation plate is provided in the main body, and an opening is provided in a housing wall at a position above a heat dissipation section of the heat dissipation plate, and a duct is provided in a display-mounting part and connected to the opening via a flexible pipe. An exhaust fan may be provided in the duct. According to another aspect of the present invention, a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer is provided, comprising a main body, a display device and a hinge shaft for coupling the main body with the display device; said hinge shaft being arranged above the main body at a distance therefrom, a heat dissipation plate is provided in the main body, in which is formed a cavity wherein an operating liquid for transporting heat is sealed.

In the drawings, reference numeral 10 denotes a main body of the notebook type computer; 11 a housing of the main body; and 12 a display device. More particularly, the display device 12 is connected by hinge shaft HS to a bracket 11aaffixed to the housing 11 and extending upwardly from the upper main surface 11-1.

[0039] The first embodiment of the heat dissipation structure for the notebook type computer thus structured conducts heat generated in high temperature elements such as CPU 16 via the heat dissipation plate 17 to the side zone 11-2 in the interior of the housing 11 and radiates the heat through the side wall 11-3 of the housing 11 to the exterior thereof. Accordingly, it is possible to radiate heat outside the housing 11 without increasing the temperature of other elements having a lower resistance to heat and mounted in a central area of the housing 11.

In both the drawings, a heat reception section 17ais a hatched portion, which is to be in contact with a high temperature element such as a CPU or similar device, and a heat dissipation section 17bis an elongate portion, which is to be located in the vicinity of the side zone 11-2 at the inside of the wall 11-3 of the housing 11 for the purpose of heat dissipation, whereby a narrow space in the side zone 11-2 can be effectively used to increase the heat dissipation efficiency.

[0041] FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a second embodiment of a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer according to the present invention. Similar to the preceding embodiment, reference numeral 10 denotes a main body; 11 a housing; and 12 a display device, and a HDD 13, a circuit board 15, a CPU 16, a heat dissipation plate 17 and so on are accommodated in the interior of the housing 11. A characteristic structure of this embodiment is that an opening 18 for air ventilation is provided at a position above the heat dissipation section 17bof the heat dissipation plate 17 extending to the side zone of the housing 11. This opening 18 may be either one or more, or a plurality of slits may be provided for this purpose.

[0042] According to the second embodiment of the heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer, heat generated by a high temperature element such as CPU 16 is conducted to a side zone of the interior of the housing 11 by the heat dissipation plate 17 and then to the air via the heat dissipation section 17b.The air thus heated is exhausted from the opening 18 to the outside of the housing. Since the heat generated within the housing 11 and dwelling in the upper zone thereof is discharged from the housing in such a manner, the interior temperature of the housing is further lowered compared with the preceding embodiment.

Then, an operating fluid in the heat pipe 20 is evaporated to a vapor which flows in the heat pipe toward the opposite end portion of the heat dissipation section having a lower temperature and loses the heat to transform to a liquid which returns to a central zone of the heat pipe via a wick. The operating fluid transports heat from a central zone to opposite end portions of the heat dissipation section in such a manner. Thus, it is possible to effectively cool a high temperature element such as a CPU.

[0049] FIG. 7 illustrates a perspective view of a fifth example of a heat dissipation plate used in a heat dissipation structure for a notebook type computer according to the present invention. This heat dissipation plate 17 is formed of a heat reception section 17aand a heat dissipation section 17bextending leftward and rightward from the heat reception section 17ato form a T-shape, and an opening 17fis provided in a central zone of the heat dissipation plate 17bwhere a heat pool is liable to be formed. A housing 11 and a heat dissipation plate 17 are solely shown in the drawing, and other parts are omitted. According to this example, since the interior of the pipe is partitioned into the outer air flow-in chamber and the inner air flow-in chamber, the high temperature element can be more reliably cooled with the outer air, and part of air in the housing can be discharged.

This heat dissipation plate is formed of a heat reception section 17aand a T-shaped pipe 21. According to this heat dissipation plate, it is possible to further effectively conduct heat from the heat dissipation section to the pipe due to an increase in the heat-conductive area of the T-shaped pipe as well as to discharge air in the housing to the outside thereof.

In this example, a metal piece 27 is provided on a heat dissipation section 17bof a T or L-shaped heat dissipation plate 17, and connected at one end thereof to a second heat dissipation plate (not shown) provided in the lower portion or the rear surface of the display device 12 such as an LCD shown respectively at 27′ and 27″. If a flexible sheet is used as the metal piece 27, the opening/closing of the display device is not disturbed. Since the heat dissipation section extends outside the main body, it is possible to carry out the effective heat dissipation.

The vapor reaches the heat dissipation section 17bto radiate the heat and the cooled vapor is transformed back into a liquid phase. Thereafter, the operation fluid in the liquid phase returns to the heat reception section 17a.
