Digital Data Processor Apparatus With Pipelined Fault Tolerant Bus Protocol

1. In digital data processor apparatus for pipelining information transfers and for recovering from error detection so as to minimally affect pipelined operations, said apparatus transferring information between functional units including a processing unit, a memory unit, and a peripheral control unit on a common bus structure, said apparatus further including clock means connected with said functional units for providing signals defining successive timing intervals, said apparatus effecting information transfers with a transfer cycle which takes place during plural timing intervals, said transfer cycle including plural operations including a definition operation which can include addressing, and a data-transfer operation, said operations of said cycle being non-overlapping and occurring in different respective timing intervals, the improvement comprising A. at least first and second duplicative buses in said bus structure, each including means for carrying definition signals representative of definition operations and means for carrying data signals representative of data-transfer operations, B. means connected with said common bus structure for detecting errors separately on each said bus in at least one of said definition operation and said data-transfer operation, and C. means connected with said common bus structure and with said detecting means for pipelining plural information transfer cycles, said pipelining including executing different operations of said plural transfer cycles, including at least first and second transfer cycles, during a single timing interval common to said plural cycles, said first and second transfer cycles having in the absence of error normal sequences of said operations, said executing means including means responsive to an error detection by said detecting means for executing the sequences of operations of said first and second transfer cycles differently with respect to one another in a timing interval subsequent to said error detection, said different execution including repeating, in said subsequent timing interval, a selected operation of said first transfer cycle, said repeated operation being one which was executed concurrently with, or prior to, the timing interval of said error detection, and for preventing during said same subsequent timing interval a selected operation of said second transfer cycle, said prevented operation being one that would otherwise occur in said subsequent interval in the absence of that error detection.

In apparatus according to claim 1, the further improvement comprising means for effecting said information transfer operations selectively on said first and second buses, and responding to an error detection by said detecting means on only one of said buses for effecting said repeated operation on the other of said buses.

3. In apparatus according to claim 1, the further improvement in which said selected operation is an operation which occurred during the timing interval during which the error was detected.

4. In apparatus according to claim 1, the further improvement in which said selected operation is a data-transfer operation from said first transfer cycle and in which said prevented other operation is a data-transfer operation from a second transfer cycle.

5. In digital data processor apparatus for pipelining information transfers and for recovering from error detection so as to minimally affect pipelined operations, said apparatus transferring information between functional units including a processing unit, a memory unit, and a peripheral control unit on a common bus structure, said apparatus further including clock means connected with said functional units for providing signals defining successive timing intervals, and including means responsive to interruption for generating a cycle-interrupting control signal, said apparatus effecting information transfers with a transfer cycle which takes place during plural timing intervals and which includes plural operations including an arbitration operation, a definition operation which can include addressing, a response operation, and a data-transfer operation, said operations of said transfer cycle being non-overlapping and occurring in different timing intervals, the improvement comprising A. means connected with said common bus structure for detecting a cycle-interrupting control signal during at least one said operation, and B. means connected with said common bus structure and with said detecting means for pipelining plural information transfer cycles, said pipelining including excuting at least two different operations of said plural transfer cycles, including at least first and second transfer cycles, concurrently during a single timing interval common to said plural cycles, C. said executing means being responsive to the detection, in a first timing interval, of said cycle-interrupting control signal for repeating, in a second interval subsequent to said first interval, at least a selected operation of said first cycle, said selected operation of the first cycle being one which occurred during or prior to the first timing interval, and for aborting said second transfer cycle, said second cycle being one for which a selected operation would otherwise occur, in the absence of that control signal detection, during said second timing interval.

6. In apparatus according to claim 5, the further improvement in which said executing means includes means for selecting said second transfer cycle to be a cycle for which a second selected operation, other than said repeated operation, occurred during the interval in which said cycle-interrupting signal was detected.

7. In apparatus according to claim 5, the further improvement in which said executing means includes means for selecting said second transfer cycle to be a cycle for which said repeated operation would otherwise occur, in the absence of that error detection, during said subsequent interval.

8. In apparatus according to any of claim 6 or 7, the further improvement whereby said executing means includes means for re-initiating said second cycle.

9. In apparatus according to claim 5, the further improvement comprising A. at least first and second duplicative buses in said bus structure, each arranged for carrying arbitration signals and definition signals and data signals and control signals, B. means for detecting an error on any one of said buses in said definition signals and, separately, in said data signals, and C. means for signaling to all said functional units the detection of any such error.

10. In apparatus according to claim 5, the further improvement comprising A. at least first and second duplicative buses in said bus structure, each arranged for carrying arbitration signals and definition signals and data signals and control signals, B. error-detecting means for detecting an error on any one of said buses in said definition signals and separately, in said data signals, and C. wherein said executing means includes means for repeating a data-transfer operation which occurred during the interval in which any of said buses carried signals which said error-detecting means detected as erroneous.

11. In apparatus according to claim 5, the further improvement comprising A. at least first and second duplicative buses in said bus structure, each arranged for carrying arbitration signals and definition signals and data signals and control signals, B. error-detecting means for detecting an error on any one of said buses in said definition signals and separately, in said data signals, and C. wherein said executing means includes means for canceling any cycle for which a definition operation occurred during the interval in which any of said buses carried signals which said error-detecting means detected as erroneous.

12. In apparatus according to claim 5, the further improvement comprising A. at least first and second duplicative buses in said bus structure, each arranged for carrying arbitration signals and definition signals and data signals and control signals, B. means for detecting an error on any one of said buses in said definition signals and separately, in said data signals, and C. switching means responsive to the detection by said detecting means of an error on only one of said buses for effecting subsequent operations on only the other of said buses.

13. In apparatus according to claim 5, the further improvement wherein said executing means includes A. means responsive to a Wait signal produced in a first timing interval for rescheduling a data-transfer operation of that first cycle, said Wait signal being indicative of the status of a functional unit toward which an addressing operation was directed.

14. In apparatus according to claim 5, the further improvement in which said executing means includes means responsive to a Busy signal produced by an addressed unit in response to an addressing operation of a transfer cycle for cancelling the cycle which includes that addressing operation.

15. A method for operating a digital data processor apparatus for pipelining information transfers and for recovering from error detection so as to minimally affect pipelined operations, said apparatus transferring information between functional units including a processing unit, a memory unit, and a peripheral control unit on a common bus structure, said apparatus further including a clock means connected with said functional units for providing signals defining successive timing intervals, said apparatus effecting information transfers with a transfer cycle which occurs during plural timing intervals and which includes plural operations including a definition operation which can include addressing, and a data-transfer operation, said operations of one cycle being non-overlapping and occurring in different respective timing intervals, said method having the improvement comprising A. transferring such information normally on at least first and second duplicative buses in said bus structure, each including means for carrying definition signals representative of definition operations and means for carrying data signals representative of data-transfer operations, B. detecting errors separately on each said bus in at least one of said definition operation and said data-transfer operation, C. pipelining plural information transfer cycles, said pipelining including the step of executing different operations of said plural transfer cycles, including at least first and second transfer cycles, during a single timing interval common to said plural cycles, said first and second transfer cycles having in the absence of error normal sequences of operations, and D. responding to an error detection in a first timing interval for executing the sequences of operations of said first and second transfer cycles differently with respect to one another in a second, subsequent timing interval, said different execution including repeating, in said subsequent timing interval, a selected operation of said first transfer cycle, said repeated operation being one which was executed concurrently with, or prior to, the timing interval of said error detection, and for preventing during said same subsequent timing interval a selected operation of said second cycle, said prevented operation being one that would otherwise occur in said subsequent interval in the absence of that error detection.

16. A method according to claim 15 comprising the further improvement of A. effecting said information transfer operations selectively on said first and second buses, and B. responding to an error detection by said detecting means on only one of said buses for effecting said repeated operation on the other of said buses.

17. A method according to claim 15 in which said selected operation is an operation which occurred during the timing interval during which the error was detected.

18. A method for operating a digital data processor apparatus for pipelining information transfers and for recovering from error detection so as to minimally affect pipelined operations, said apparatus transferring information between functional units including a processing unit, a memory unit, and a peripheral control unit on a common bus structure, said apparatus further including clock means connected with said functional units for providing signals defining successive timing intervals signals, and including means responsive to interruption for generating a cycle-interrupting control signal, said apparatus effecting information transfers with a transfer cycle which occurs during plural timing intervals and which includes plural operations including an arbitration operation, a definition operation which can include addressing, a response operation, and a data-transfer operation, said operations of one cycle being non-overlapping and occurring in different timing intervals, said method having the improvement comprising A. pipelining plural information transfer cycles, said pipelining including the step of executing at least two different ones of said operations of said plural transfer cycles, including first and second transfer cycles, concurrently during a single timing interval common to said plural cycles, B. detecting a cycle-interrupting control signal during execution of at least one said operation, and C. responding to the detection, in one timing interval, of said cycle-interrupting control signal for repeating, in a subsequent interval at least a first selected operation of said first cycle, said selected operation of the first cycle being one which occurred during an interval in which said cycle-interrupting signal was detected, and for aborting said second cycle, said second transfer cycle being one for which a selected operation would otherwise occur, in the absence of that control signal detection, during said subsequent interval.

19. A method according to claim 18 in which said improvement further comprises selecting said second transfer cycle to be a cycle for which a second selected operation, other than said repeated operation, occurred during the interval in which said cycle-interrupting signal was detected.

20. A method according to claim 18 in which said improvement further comprises selecting said second transfer cycle to be a cycle for which the operation which would occur, in the absence of that error detection, during said subsequent interval is said repeated operation.

21. A method according to claim 18 in which said improvement further comprises A. selecting said second transfer cycle to be a cycle having an operation that would otherwise conflict with said repeated operation, and B. re-initiating said second transfer cycle in an interval after said subsequent interval.

22. A method according to claim 18 in which said improvement further comprises responding to a Wait signal, produced in a first timing interval when an addressed unit is not ready for addressing operation in said first cycle, for re-scheduling the data operation of said first cycle to a timing interval subsequent to said first interval.

23. A method according to claim 18 in which said improvement further comprises A. means responding to a Busy signal produced by an addressed unit during the timing interval of an addressing operation with that unit, and B. canceling the cycle which includes that addressing operation.

24. In digital data processor apparatus for pipelining information transfers and for recovering from error detection so as to minimally affect pipelined phases, said apparatus transferring information between functional units including a processing unit, a memory unit, and a peripheral control unit on a common bus structure, said apparatus including clock means connected with said functional units for providing signals defining successive timing intervals, said apparatus effecting information transfers with a transfer cycle which takes place during plural timing intervals and which includes plural phases, including a definition phase which can include addressing, and a data-transfer phase, said phases of one cycle being non-overlapping and occurring in different respective timing intervals, the improvement comprising A. means connected with said bus structure for pipelining plural information transfer cycles, said pipelining including executing different phases of said plural transfer cycles concurrently during a single timing interval common to said plural cycles, B. means connected with said bus structure and with said functional units for detecting at least one of an interruption and an information transfer error during a first timing interval common to at least first and second concurrently-executing transfer cycles, said first and second transfer cycles having in the absence of error or interruption normal sequences of operations, and C. means connected with said detecting means and with said bus structure responsive to said detection during said first timing interval for executing the sequences of operations of said first and second transfer cycles differently with respect to one another in a second, subsequent timing interval, said different execution including repeating, in said second timing interval, a selected phase of said first transfer cycle, said repeated phase being one which was executed concurrently with, or prior to, said first timing intervals, and for preventing from occurring during said second timing interval a selected phase of said second transfer cycle.

25. In apparatus according to claim 24, the further improvement wherein said repeated phase and said prevented phase are like phases.

26. In apparatus according to claim 25, the further improvement wherein said repeated phase is a data tranfer phase of said first transfer cycle and said prevented phase is a data transfer operation of said second transfer cycle.

27. In apparatus according to claim 25, the further improvement in which said detecting means includes means responsive to a Wait signal produced in a first timing interval, and which is indicative of the readiness of a functional unit toward which addressing information of a first transfer cycle was directed, for rescheduling the data transfer phase of said first cycle to a timing interval subsequent to said first interval and for cancelling a second cycle for which a data transfer phase would otherwise occur in that subsequent interval.

28. In digital data processor apparatus for pipelining information transfers and for recovering from error detection so as to minimally affect pipelined phases, said apparatus transferring information between functional units including a processing unit, a memory unit, and a peripheral control unit on a common bus structure, said apparatus including clock means connected with said functional units for providing signals defining successive timing intervals, said apparatus effecting information transfers with a transfer cycle which takes place during plural timing intervals and which includes plural phases, including a definition phase which can include addressing, and a data-transfer phase, where said phases of one cycle are non-overlapping and occur in different respective timing intervals of the transfer cycle, said bus structure including means for carrying definition signals representative of a definition phase and means for carrying data signals representative of a data-transfer phase, A. means connected with said common bus structure for pipelining plural information transfer cycles, said pipelining including executing said plural transfer cycles concurrently during a single timing interval common to said plural cycles, B. means connected with said common bus structure for detecting at least one of an interruption and an information transfer error occurring during a first timing interval common to at least first and second concurrently-executing transfer cycles, and C. means connected with said common bus structure and with said detecting means for responding to said detection of at least one of an interruption and a data transfer error for executing a differing sequence of phases of said first transfer cycle relative to the sequence of phases of said second transfer cycle than such relative sequence would be executed in the absence of said detection.

29. In apparatus according to claim 28, wherein said transfer cycle further includes an arbitration phase, and wherein said bus structure is further arranged to carry arbitration signals representative of said arbitration phase, the further improvement in which A. said executing means includes means responsive to the detection of an information transfer error during said first timing interval for providing an operation selected from a repeating operation, a continuing operation, and an aborting operation, B. said repeating operation repeats, in a third, subsequent timing interval, a data-transfer phase of said first concurrently-executing cycle, said first cycle being one which executed a data-transfer phase during said first timing interval, C. said continuing operation continues execution of a normal sequence of phases of said second concurrently-executing cycle, said second cycle being one which i. had executed an arbitration phase during said first timing interval, or ii. would execute a data-transfer phase during a second timing interval, said second timing interval being subsequent to said first timing interval and being prior to said third timing interval, said normal sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which would normally have been executed in absence of said error detection, and D. said aborting operation aborting a remaining sequence of phases of a third said concurrently-executing cycle, said third cycle being one which would have executed a data-transfer phase during said third timing interval, said remaining sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which normally would have been executed subsequent to said first time interval in absence of said error detection.

30. In apparatus according to claim 28, wherein said transfer cycle further includes an arbitration phase, and wherein said bus structure is further arranged to carry arbitration signals representative of said arbitration phase, the further improvement in which A. said executing means includes means responsive to the detection of a first selected interruption during said first timing interval for providing an operation selected from a further effecting operation, a continuing operation, and an aborting operation, B. said further effecting operation executing in a third, subsequent timing interval, a data-transfer phase of said first concurrently-executing cycle, said first cycle being one which would normally have effected a data-transfer phase during a second timing interval, said second timing interval being subsequent to said first timing interval and being prior to said third timing interval, C. said continuing operation continues execution of a normal sequence of phases of said second concurrently-executing cycle, said second cycle being one which had executed an arbitration phase during said first timing interval, said normal sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which would normally have occurred in absence of said first selected interruption detection, and D. said aborting operation aborts a remaining sequence of phases of a third said concurrently-executing cycle, said third cycle being one which would have executed a data-transfer phase during said third timing interval, said remaining sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which normally would have been executed subsequent to said first time interval in absence of said first selected interruption detection.

31. In apparatus according to claim 28, wherein said transfer cycle further includes an arbitration phase, and wherein said bus structure is further arranged to carry arbitration signals representative of said arbitration phase, the further improvement in which A. said executing means includes means responsive to detection of an occurrence of a second selected interruption during said first timing interval for providing an operation selected from an aborting operation and a continuing operation, B. said aborting operation aborts a remaining sequence of phases of said first concurrently-executing cycle, said first cycle being one which would have had effected a data-transfer phase during a second selected timing interval subsequent to said first timing interval, said remaining sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which normally would have been executed subsequent to said first time interval in absence of said second selected interruption detection, and C. said continuing operation continues execution of a normal sequence of phases of said second concurrently-transferring cycle, said second cycle being one which would execute a data-transfer phase during another selected timing interval not being said second selected timing interval, said normal sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which would normally have occurred in absence of said second selected interruption detection.

32. A method for operating a digital data processor apparatus for pipelining information transfers and for recovering from error detection so as to minimally affect pipelined phases, said apparatus transferring information between functional units including a processing unit, a memory unit, and a peripheral control unit on a common bus structure, said apparatus including clock means connected with said functional units for providing signals defining successive timing intervals, said apparatus effecting information transfers with a transfer cycle which takes place during plural timing intervals and which includes plural phases, including a definition phase which can include addressing, and a data-transfer phase, where said phases of one cycle are non-overlapping, and occur in different respective timing intervals of the transfer cycle, the improvement comprising A. pipelining plural information transfer cycles, said pipelining including the step of excecuting different phases of said plural transfer cycles concurrently during a single timing interval common to said plural cycles, said transfer normally occurring on at least a first conductor of said bus structure, said conductor including means for carrying definition signals representative of a definition phase and means for carrying data signals representative of a data-transfer phase, B. detecting at least one of an interruption and an information transfer error during a first timing interval common to at least first and second concurrently-executing transfer cycles, and C. responding to said detection for executing a different sequence of phases of said first transfer cycle relative to the sequence of phases said second transfer cycle than such relative sequence would be executed in absence of said detection.

33. In method of claim 32, wherein said transfer cycle further includes an arbitration phase, and wherein said bus structure is further arranged to carry arbitration signals representative of said arbitration phase, the further improvement in which A. said responding step includes responding to detection of an occurrence of an information transfer error during said first timing interval for executing at least one step selected from the steps of a repeating step, a continuing step, and an aborting step, B. said repeating step repeats, in a third subsequent timing interval, a data-transfer phase of said first concurrently-executing cycle, said first cycle being one which had executed a data-transfer phase during said first timing interval, C. said continuing step continues execution of a normal sequence of phases of said second concurrently-transferring cycle, said second cycle being one which i. had executed an arbitration phase during said first timing interval, or ii. would execute a data-transfer phase during a second timing interval, said second timing interval being subsequent to said first timing interval and being prior to said third timing interval, said normal sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which would normally have been executed in absence of said error detection, and D. said aborting step aborts execution of a remaining sequence of phases of a third said concurrently-executing cycle, said third cycle being one which would have executed a data-transfer phase during said third timing interval, said remaining sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which normally would have been executed subsequent to said first time interval in absence of said error detection.

34. In method of claim 32, wherein said transfer cycle further includes an arbitration phase, and wherein said bus structure is further arranged to carry arbitration signals representative of said arbitration phase, the further improvement in which A. said responding step includes responding to detection of a first selected interruption during said first timing interval for executing at least one step selected from the steps of an effecting step, a continuing step, and an aborting step, B. said effecting step executes in a third subsequent timing interval, a data-transfer phase of said first concurrently-executing cycle, said first cycle being one which would normally have executed a data-transfer phase during a second timing interval, said second timing interval being subsequent to said first timing interval and being prior to said third timing interval, C. said continuing step continues execution of a normal sequence of phases of said second concurrently-executing cycle, said second cycle being one which had executed an arbitration phase during said first timing interval, said normal sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which would normally have occurred in absence of said occurrence of said first selected interruption, and D. said aborting step aborts execution of a remaining sequence of phases of a third said concurrently-executing cycle, said third cycle being one which would have executed a data-transfer phase during said third timing interval, said remaining sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which normally would have been executed subsequent to said first time interval in absence of said occurrence of said first selected interruption.

35. In method of claim 32, wherein said transfer cycle further includes an arbitration phase, and wherein said bus structure is further arranged to carry arbitration signal representative of said arbitration phase, the further improvement in which A. said responding step includes responding to detection of a second selected interruption during said first timing interval for executing at least one step selected from the steps of an aborting step and a continuing step, B. said aborting step aborts a remaining sequence of phases of said first concurrently-executing cycle, said first cycle being one which would have had executed a data-transfer phase during a second selected timing interval subsequent to said first timing interval, said remaining sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which normally would have been executed subsequent to said first time interval in absence of said second selected interruption, and C. said continuing step continuing execution of a normal sequence of phases of said second concurrently-executing cycle, said second cycle being one which would execute a data-transfer phase during another selected timing interval not being said second selected timing interval, said normal sequence of phases being that sequence of phases which would normally have occurred in absence of said occurrence of said second selected interruption.
