SETBACK CONTROLS BASED ON OUT-OF-ROOM PRESENCE INFORMATION

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to energy management and security systems, devices, and methods particularly well suited for use in multi-room facilities.

[0002] The energy management of multi-room, or multi-suite, facilities such as hotels, apartment buildings, office complexes, dormitories, office buildings, classrooms, cruise ships, laboratory facilities, and similar structures is complex and demanding. Specifically, the unique demands associated with multi-room facilities, including facility security, facility operational efficiency, and facility maintenance, can contribute to high operational costs for the typical facility operator. As multi-room facilities increase in size so do the costs associated with facility management and maintenance.

[0003] In a hotel, for example, individual rooms utilize devices/elements such as doors, electronic locks, Do Not Disturb (DND) devices, lights, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), safe, minibar, draperies, maid communication devices, room occupancy detection and communication, and more and all have a potentially high impact on the hotel operation (particularly the operating costs) as well as guest comfort.

[0004] Many building owners, including the owners of apartments, offices and hotels, continue to seek methods to decrease their HVAC expenses. One method to do so is to select minimum and maximum setback temperatures for a room, which require less operation of the room's HVAC equipment, when the room is not occupied. This method requires an accurate occupancy sensor.

[0005] In the past, motion detectors have been used as occupancy sensors in rooms. In particular, infrared motion detectors have been used. An infrared motion detector typically measures persons or objects that are both 1) showing a selected surface temperature difference from that of the room and 2) moving at a selected speed.

[0006] However, the use of a motion detector as an occupancy sensor does not produce an accurate indication of a room being occupied in situations in which an occupant remains motionless for an extended period of time, such as in sleeping, reading or watching television. The motion detector is also not accurate in rooms in which the geometry of the room includes blind spots to the motion detector such as alcoves or bathrooms.

[0007] Moreover, the use of motion detectors may be capable of differentiating between a general state of occupancy associated with a room, but they are incapable of determining a general or specific location of the occupant after the occupant has left the room. As such, the typical multi-room facility operator cannot make use of more efficient energy management techniques and deeper setback controls to save the wasted energy consumption costs associated with an unoccupied room.

[0008] It is, therefore, one aspect of the present disclosure to provide a more intelligent mechanism for managing the operations of a multi-room facility. More specifically, embodiments of the present disclosure provide methods, systems, and devices for determining occupancy states of a room, or collection of rooms, based at least in part on a location of a mobile device associated with the room or collection of rooms. In accordance with at least some embodiments of the present disclosure, the occupancy state of a room or collection of rooms may be determined by analyzing a combination of a door state, motion activity within the room or rooms, and/or a mobile device location. Once a room occupancy state is determined, certain room functions may be controlled to conserve energy.

[0009] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a setback controls system to control the in-room energy consumption based on detecting the location of an occupant in relation to the room. It can be offline (in-room only) or as a part of an online system using online device networks such as those described in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 11/872,549 to Alexander et al., and U.S. patent application Ser. No. 12/691,862 to Alexander et al., the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference for all that they teach and for all purposes. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, components of the setback controls system comprise one or more of an intelligent thermostat module, a motion sensor which may also have some built in intelligence, a mobile device which may have some built-in intelligence, a software system for controlling the transmission of a message between the setback controls system and the mobile device, a software system for controlling the transmission of a message throughout the multi-room facility, and service terminal software for a handheld programmer unit, which may also be referred to as a service terminal. The online system may utilize existing gateways and, if needed, existing routers of a lock network. In some embodiments, these gateways are outside of the room and receive data wirelessly from several rooms and convert it to network data, usually in the form of a TCP/IP packet.

[0010] In accordance with at least one embodiment of the present disclosure, the door lock is adapted to send a wireless message to the thermostat controller each time the door is opened, detailing that it is a door open command, opened by key or from the inside, and if by key sends the user type (guest or staff) and expiration date if it is a guest key. The door lock may also send a message when the door is closed.

[0011] In some embodiments, the mobile device is configured to send a wireless message to the thermostat controller, setback controls system, or other in-room device or near-room device when the mobile device changes location. This change in location may include moving from one position to another inside a room, outside a room, and/or combinations thereof. Additionally or alternatively, the change in location may be recorded and/or compared to previous location information associated with the mobile device. Among other things, by comparing location positions at different times, the direction of travel of the mobile device may determined. It is an aspect of the present disclosure that location and/or direction of travel may be determined using GPS data, WiFi access point detection, cell tower location and/or combinations thereof in real-time, near-real-time, and/or based on historical data. The location and/or direction of travel may be used to determine the level of setback control to apply to a room or plurality of rooms.

[0012] It is an aspect of the present disclosure that the wireless message may be sent by the mobile device automatically or manually. In one embodiment, the wireless message may be sent in response to at least one input received. Various inputs may include one or more request, timer, device state (on, off, sleep, energy-saving mode, etc.), mobile device location, and the like. It may be possible to configure the mobile device to refrain from sending this information more than once in a predetermined time period (e.g., 30 second time period).

[0013] In some embodiments, the thermostat controller receives this information and makes determinations of the occupancy of the room. When the door is closed and motion has been sensed, the room enters the Occupied State. Additionally or alternatively, when the mobile device is detected as being inside the room, or in-room, the room may enter the Occupied State. In this state, control of the HVAC system, and in the future other energy consuming devices such as the lighting and TV, will be given to the occupant based on the settings of the thermostat. When the door opens, the thermostat controller will operate based on the set temperature of the unit for a configurable period of time (typically 8 minutes), and will enter or remain in the Unoccupied or Unsold state until a “door closed and motion detected” and/or “mobile device in-room” message is received. If no motion is detected for a configurable amount of time (e.g., 8 minutes), the thermostat controller may control the room based on the energy management settings, not the local settings of the thermostat. Additional features may be included to determine response to conditions when the door is left open, based on if it is an interior corridor door or an exterior door.

If any of these (or other) devices are used, the setback controls system can determine that a person is inside the controlled space. This feature is especially useful in the event that a mobile device associated with the controlled space belongs to an occupant who has left the space with the mobile device, but other occupants remain in the controlled space. For example, the children of a family may remain in the room of a hotel while the parents attend a party in some other area of the hotel. In this scenario it may not be desired to control the room functions in a setback mode.

[0017] In accordance with at least some embodiments of the present disclosure, the state of “door closed”, plus any other device being used, means the room is occupied.

[0018] It is another aspect of the present disclosure to provide an intruder detection and alert feature. This particular feature is a security alert that can be used in rooms where occupancy determination is present. To use this feature, a motion sensor and online door lock may be employed. As one example, if the inside handle of the door lock is turned, but the room is in the unoccupied state, an alarm is issued to alert security that an under the door tool may have been used to gain access surreptitiously. This alarm can be sounded in a number of methods, including computer screen, email, SMS, buzzer, etc.

[0019] It is another aspect of the present disclosure to provide an automated Do Not Disturb (DND) feature. This feature may also be used in a room where occupancy determination is present. In accordance with at least some embodiments of the present disclosure, when the room enters the occupied state, a signal is sent to the door lock to enable the DND feature of the lock without the guest having to do anything.

[0020] In another aspect of the present disclosure, a motion only functionality may be utilized whereby occupancy state can be determined without door monitoring. This feature may employ one or more motion sensors and a controller, which may be provided in a thermostat or other central management device. In some embodiments, two time intervals may be defined, a daytime interval and a typically shorter nighttime interval, although the daytime interval may be equal to or shorter than the nighttime interval. In the daytime interval, whenever motion is detected, an energy management system may enter an occupied state for a configurable (customer configuration or administrator configuration) number of minutes, e.g. 15-30. Each time motion is detected, the timer is restarted. When in the nighttime interval, if motion is detected, the energy management system may lock into an occupied state until the daytime interval is reached.

[0021] In another aspect of the present disclosure, a mechanism is provided for turning off a motion sensor (e.g., to save batteries) when occupancy of a room is confirmed. When using door monitoring and motion detection for occupancy determination, or in nighttime interval of utilizing motion-only occupancy detection, once occupancy is confirmed by the door being closed and motion sensed, the motion sensor may be turned off until the door has been opened again. By entering this sleep mode, the battery life of the motion sensor will be extended.

[0022] It is an aspect of the present disclosure that the setback controls system and/or mobile device are capable of utilizing one or more motion detectors associated with a room, or rooms, to determine the presence of one or more occupants inside a room. Although the one or more motion detectors may be used alone to determine a state of occupancy associated with a room, the present disclosure is directed to the use of mobile devices to provide an accurate room occupancy state and/or occupant location. In some embodiments, the mobile device and the one or more motion detectors may be used in combination by the setback controls system in determining a precise location of an occupant inside a room.

[0023] In some embodiments, the energy use and/or energy control of a room may be set to various levels of setback based on the occupancy state of a room and a location of the mobile device associated with the room. A low-level setback may adjust HVAC output by changing the set-point temperature by one or more degrees. On the other hand, a deep-level setback may adjust HVAC output by deactivating the device for a period of time. In the event that an occupant has left a room, the setback controls may be adjusted to a low-level setback, a mid-level set-back, or a deep-level setback. A low-level setback may be initiated where the occupant is expected to return (e.g., based on one or more of location, distance from room, and time away from room) in a short amount of time (e.g., 5 minutes or less). The deep-level setback may be initiated when the occupant is not expected to return to a room for a long period of time (e.g., 2 hours or more). It is an aspect of the present disclosure that the mid-level setback may be initiated for any range in between the low-level and deep-level setback. Furthermore, the setback levels and temperatures associated therewith may be defined by a user (e.g., customer or holder of the mobile device) and/or administratively (e.g., by the hotel staff). In some embodiments, the hotel administration may define an acceptable range of temperatures for one or all conditions and a user may pick a specific temperature within that range of temperatures. Further still, the user may define these temperatures before check-in, during a mobile check-in, or after they have checked-in.

[0024] As can be appreciated, the energy control of a room may be returned to an occupied state upon detecting an approaching location and/or condition associated with the mobile device. In other words, the room may be operated in a normal (i.e., non-setback) condition upon detecting that a mobile device is returning to the room. The detection of a mobile device returning to a room may be achieved without detecting presence in the room. It is a feature of the present disclosure that adjustments may be made to the room control without negatively affecting the comfort of the occupant. For instance, the room may be operated in a deep-level setback while the occupant is away from the room for some time, but if it is detected that the occupant is returning to the room, the HVAC and/or other controls may be returned to the room before the occupant arrives. By the time the occupant arrives at the room, the temperature of the room can be returned to the occupied state temperature, and the entire setback control process would be invisible to the occupant.

[0025] In some embodiments, the setback controls may be operated in accordance with mobile device location. Among other things, the location and direction of travel of an associated mobile device may be determined by GPS coordinates and data, WiFi access point addresses, and/or Telephony/Cellular location data and/or cell tower use (i.e., Location Information). The mobile device may be equipped with an application that communicates with a setback control system associated with the multi-room facility and/or room. This application may accept requests for position by the setback controls system on a programmed and/or timed basis. For example, an occupant may have a mobile device associated with a room of a multi-room facility. The occupant may decide to leave the room at 9:00 in the morning taking the associated mobile device from the room. Once the occupant has left the room, the setback controls system may determine to start a timer before requesting a first location of the occupant. When the timer expires, the request for occupant location may be sent to the occupant's mobile device. Upon receiving the request, the mobile device accesses its Location Information and sends a message containing at least the occupant's location to the setback controls system for processing. The setback controls system then determines to adjust setback levels of the room based on rules (e.g., distance from room, time away from room, anticipated time to return to the room, habit and/or historical data, user preferences, and more).

[0026] It is an aspect of the present disclosure that the occupant's direction of travel may be used to adjust the setback controls. The occupant's direction of travel may be determined in a number of ways including but not limited to determining a first location associated with an occupant at a first time, determining a second location associated with the occupant at a second time, comparing the first location of the occupant to the second location of the occupant, and determining whether the second location of the occupant is further away from a specific point of reference (e.g., the room) or closer to the specific point of reference. In the event that the second location is determined to be further from the specific point of reference, then the occupant may be determined to be traveling away from the room. However, it may be determined that the second location is closer to the specific point of reference and therefore the occupant may be traveling toward the room. It is not necessary, however, that the specific point of reference be the room or multi-room facility. As long as the specific point of reference is known, the computations for determining direction of travel can be adjusted.

These zones may be used to initiate a response by the setback controls system. For instance, if the occupant described above has been detected as traveling from one zone to another zone, the setback control system may respond by adjusting the setback controls. Additionally or alternatively, if it is detected that an occupant is located within a certain zone, the setback controls system may determine whether to activate setback or not. In some embodiments, the setback controls system may use a combination of Location Information and zones to fine tune a process of room control.

The controller 214 may also be adapted to facilitate communications between the thermostat 204 and the other in-room devices 208, 212 as well as out of room devices, such as a gateway 216 (which is but one example of an intermediate device 116). For example, a WAN, cellular network, SMS network, CDMA network, TCP/IP network, or any other type of communication network may be used in addition to or in lieu of the LAN 220.

Multiple controllers 214 may also be useful in situations where it is desirable to avoid a single point of failure. Specifically, a first controller 214 in the room 112 may be the primary controller 214 responsible for performing all controlling activities and a second controller 214 in the room 112 may be the room's backup controller that is only activated when the primary controller 214 has a failure or otherwise becomes unable to perform its controlling duties. Additionally or alternatively, one or more mobile devices 124 associated with the room 112 may be provided with a controller 214.

[0052] With reference now to FIG. 3, a mobile device 124 location system for communication with a setback controls system of a multi-room facility 300 will be described in accordance with at least some embodiments of the present disclosure. As previously disclosed, the facility 300 includes a plurality of rooms 112a-N. In some embodiments, one or more mobile devices 124a-b may be associated with one or more of the rooms 112. These mobile devices 124a-b may provide location information to the facility 300 that can be used by the setback controls system server 224 and/or setback controls logic 120 (see FIG. 1) to determine an energy management scheme, including a setback control, of one or more rooms 112.

[0053] It is an aspect of the present disclosure that a mobile device 124 may provide location information by sending a message to at least one administrative device 108, 224 associated with the facility 300 for setback control interpretation. The message may contain general or specific location information of the mobile device 124. For instance, a room 112 may have varying levels of energy setback that are at least partially dependent on the time that an occupant may be away from the room 112. A deeper setback level may be employed when an occupant is not expected to return to the room 112 for a longer period of time. Refined location information may be gathered by the location application utilizing the signal strength of location points 312, multiple location services, and the like.

In this case, the options may appear as “Ignore,” “Accept,” or “Deny.” If the operator, or occupant, selects the “Ignore” option, the administrative device 108, 224 may proceed according to rules and even initiate deep-level setback. The rules may be such that an “Ignore” input causes the administrative device 108, 224 to resend the control option message. Alternatively, an “Ignore” selection may initiate a timer before initiating deep-level setback in this case. An “Accept” selection may perform similarly to the “Ignore” selection behavior. On the other hand, if the “Deny” selection is made, the administrative device 108, 224 may respond by ceasing to initiate deep-level setback controls. It is anticipated that a timer may be started to resend the setback control message after a period of time. In some cases, the operator may initiate the setback controls without a message from the administrative device 108, 224. In some embodiments, no option may be selected, in which case, the administrative device 108, 224 continues according to rules.

In some situations, the timer may be set to “zero,” or no time, to facilitate an immediate subsequent location information determination. Exemplary rules that direct timer state may include variably delaying subsequent determination based on device 124 location.

A device 124 in the first zone 308a may report location information at a sampling rate of three samples per minute. This sampling rate may be adjusted depending on rules and/or the rate of travel associated with a device 124. For instance, it may be determined that a device 124 is approaching the second zone 308b from the third zone 308c at a rate of speed that, when extrapolated, places the device 124 to arrive in the first zone 308a in less than a minute. In this case, the sampling rate may be dynamically and/or automatically increased to, among other things, report greater location information accuracy of the device 124.
