Abstract

The present inventions, in one aspect, are directed to techniques and/or circuitry to adapt the charging of a battery/cell using data which is representative of an overpotential of the battery/cell. In yet another aspect the present inventions are directed to techniques and/or circuitry to calculate data which is representative of an overpotential of the battery/cell.

No. 13/167,782, entitled “Method and Circuitry to Calculate the State of Charge of a Battery/Cell”, filed Jun. 24, 2011, which is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. Introduction

[0002] The present inventions relate to methods and circuitry to adaptively charge a battery/cell. In particular, in one aspect, the present inventions are directed to techniques and/or circuitry to adaptively charge a battery/cell using data which is representative of a change in terminal voltage of the battery/cell. In yet another aspect, the present inventions are directed to techniques and/or circuitry to adaptively charge a battery/cell using data which is representative of a partial relaxation time of the battery/cell. In another aspect the present inventions are directed to techniques and/or circuitry to adaptively charge a battery/cell using data which is representative of an overpotential or full relaxation time of the battery/cell. In another aspect the present inventions are directed to techniques and/or circuitry to adaptively charge a battery/cell using data which is representative of a state of charge of the battery/cell. In another aspect the present inventions are directed to techniques and/or circuitry to adaptively charge a battery/cell using data which is representative of a state of health of the battery/cell.

[0003] In one embodiment, the adaptive charging techniques and/or circuitry uses and/or employs such data, in connection with certain constraints or requirements (that will be described below) to change, adjust, control and/or vary the charging current signal(s), including the characteristics thereof (including, for example, shape of charge and/or discharge signal (if any), amplitude thereof, duration thereof, duty cycle thereof and/or rest period (if any)), applied to the terminals of the battery/cell.

[0004] In certain embodiments, two considerations in connection with implementing adaptive charging circuitry and techniques include (i) minimizing and/or reducing total charging time and (ii) maximizing and/or increasing cycle life. In this regard, for practical reasons, the battery/cell is charged within a given period of time (for example, a maximum allowed period of time). Typically, a specification value is defined or chosen depending on the application. For example, it is approximately 2 to 4 hours for batteries employed in consumer applications, and for batteries employed in transportation applications, it may be up to 8 hours. This results in a specification for a net effective average charging current over the duration of the charging period.

[0005] In addition, to maximize and/or increase cycle life of the battery/cell, it may be desirable to charge the battery/cell (i) at a lower current and/or (ii) provide rest periods between or in periods of charging (for example, between charging signals or packets) wherein no charge is applied to or injected into the battery/cell. Thus, in certain aspects, the charging circuitry of the present inventions implement adaptive techniques which seek to (i) minimize and/or reduce total charging time of the battery/cell and (ii) maximize and/or increase the cycle life of the battery/cell (by, for example, minimizing and/or reducing degradation mechanisms of the charging operation).

[0006] The present inventions also relate to techniques or methods of estimating, measuring, calculating, assessing and/or determining characteristics or parameters of the battery/cell including, for example, a terminal voltage (and/or changes therein) of a battery/cell, state of charge (and/or changes therein) of a battery/cell, and/or a relaxation time (and/or changes therein) of a battery/cell, a state of health (and/or changes therein) of a battery/cell. Notably, data which is representative of characteristics or parameters of the battery/cell (for example, the state of charge, relaxation time, impedance, state of health and/or terminal voltage) may be dependent on temperature. With that in mind in the discussion below, in connection with circuitry and techniques for adaptively charging a battery, it will be implicit that there may be a dependence on temperature. As such, while temperature may not be necessarily mentioned below, such data may be dependent on the temperature of the battery

Summary

[0007] There are many inventions described and illustrated herein. The present inventions are neither limited to any single aspect nor embodiment thereof, nor to any combinations and/or permutations of such aspects and/or embodiments. Moreover, each of the aspects of the present inventions, and/or embodiments thereof, may be employed alone or in combination with one or more of the other aspects of the present inventions and/or embodiments thereof. For the sake of brevity, many of those permutations and combinations will not be discussed separately herein.

[0009] In a first principal aspect, the present inventions are directed to a method to determine the state of charge of a battery, wherein the battery includes at least two terminals, the method comprising: applying a signal (for example, a charge signal) to the terminals of the battery, wherein the signal includes a plurality of pulses, measuring a voltage at the terminals of the battery, determining data which is representative of a relaxation time of the battery (a partial relaxation time or a full relaxation time), wherein the relaxation time is an amount of time corresponding to when, in response to a pulse (charge pulse or discharge pulse) of the signal, the voltage at the terminals of the battery/cell decays to at least a predetermined voltage, and determining data which is representative of a state of charge of the battery using the data which is representative of the relaxation time. The method may also include displaying the data which is representative of the state of charge of the battery.

[0010] In one embodiment, the method further includes adapting one or more characteristics of the signal based on or using data which is representative of the state of charge of the battery, wherein adapting one or more characteristics of the signal based on or using data which is representative of the relaxation time includes changing the amount of time between successive pulses of the plurality of pulses of the signal. In another embodiment, the method further includes adapting one or more characteristics of the signal based on or using data which is representative of the state of charge of the battery, wherein adapting one or more characteristics of the signal includes changing the amplitude and/or duration of at least one pulse of the signal.

[0013] In another principal aspect, the present invention is directed to an apparatus to determine the state of charge of a battery, wherein the battery includes at least two terminals, the apparatus comprises circuitry, coupled to the battery, to generate a signal (for example, a charge signal) and apply the signal to the terminals of the battery, wherein the signal includes a pulse, and measurement circuitry, coupled to the battery, to measure a voltage at the terminals of the battery, and control circuitry, coupled to the measurement circuitry to receive data which is representative of the voltage at the terminals of the battery. The control circuitry is configured to (i) determine data which is representative of a relaxation time of the battery (a partial relaxation time or a full relaxation time), wherein the relaxation time is an amount of time corresponding to when, in response to the pulse of the signal, the voltage at the terminals of the battery/cell decays to at least a predetermined voltage and (ii) determine data which is representative of a state of charge of the battery using or based on the relaxation time.

The method may also include outputting the state of charge of the battery.

[0018] In yet another principal aspect, the present inventions are directed to an apparatus to determine a state of charge of a battery, wherein the battery includes at least two terminals, the apparatus comprises signal generation circuitry, coupled to the battery, to generate a pulse and apply the pulse to the terminals of the battery, measurement circuitry, coupled to the battery, to measure a voltage at the terminals of the battery, control circuitry, coupled to the measurement circuitry, wherein the control circuitry is configured to: (i) determine data which is representative of a relaxation time (a partial relaxation time or a full relaxation time) of the battery, wherein the relaxation time is an amount of time corresponding to when, in response to the pulse, the voltage at the terminals of the battery/cell decays to at least a predetermined voltage, and (ii) generate a state of charge of the battery using data which is representative of (a) the relaxation time of the battery and (b) a voltage at the terminals of the battery. The apparatus may also include a display, coupled to the control circuitry, to display data which is representative of the state of charge of the battery.

For example, where the charging techniques and/or circuitry apply charge packets, having one or more charge pulses, to the battery/cell during a charging sequence, cycle or operation, in one embodiment, the charging techniques and/or circuitry may adapt, adjust and/or control the amplitude and/or pulse width of the charge or current pulses applied to or injected into the battery/cell by subsequent packet(s) (for example, the immediately subsequent packets) so that the change in voltage at the terminals of the battery/cell in response to such subsequent charge packet(s) is within a predetermined range and/or below a predetermined value. In this embodiment, the charging techniques and/or circuitry may adapt, adjust and/or control one or more characteristics of the charge or current applied to or injected into the battery/cell via adapting, adjusting and/or controlling the shape, amplitude and/or width of charge pulse(s) of the subsequent packet(s).

In either case, this overpotential value increases as the SOH degrades (capacity fade of the battery/cell), and is directly correlated to SOH of the battery/cell.

What is claimed is:

1. A method to adaptively charge a battery, wherein the battery includes at least two terminals, the method comprising:

applying a charge signal to the terminals of the battery, wherein the charge signal includes at least one pulse;

measuring a terminal voltage of the battery which is a voltage between the terminals of the battery, wherein measuring the terminal voltage of the battery includes measuring a first terminal voltage of the battery at a first predetermined time relative to applying the charge signal to the terminals of the battery;

monitoring the terminal voltage of the battery after applying the at least one pulse to the terminals of the battery to determine a second terminal voltage, wherein the second terminal voltage of the battery is a voltage which correlates to an equilibrium voltage of the battery; and

calculating data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery using the first terminal voltage of the battery and the second terminal voltage of the battery; and

adapting one or more characteristics of the charge signal based on or using data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery.

2. The method of claim 1 further including:

determining whether the overpotential of the battery is within a predetermined range and/or greater than a predetermined value; and

wherein adapting one or more characteristics of the charge signal further includes adapting one or more characteristics of the charge signal if the overpotential of the battery exceeds the predetermined range and/or is greater than the predetermined value.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the predetermined range and/or the predetermined value dynamically change during charging of the battery in accordance with changes in a state of charge of the battery and/or a state of health of the battery.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the voltage which correlates to an equilibrium voltage of the battery is a terminal voltage of the battery which is substantially constant after applying the at least one pulse of the charge signal to the terminals of the battery.

5. The method of claim 1 further including determining the equilibrium voltage of the battery using (i) the second terminal voltage and (ii) characteristics of a decay of the terminal voltage associated with the battery.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein measuring a first terminal voltage of the battery at a first predetermined time relative to applying the charge signal to the terminals of the battery includes measuring the first terminal voltage immediately before, at a beginning of or at an end of the at least one pulse of the charge signal.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the second terminal voltage is a value which is a predetermined percentage of the first terminal voltage, and

calculating data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery further includes using (i) characteristics of a decay of the terminal voltage of the battery associated with the battery and (ii) an amount of time for the terminal voltage of the battery to decay to the second terminal voltage of the battery.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein calculating data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery further includes using (i) an amount of time for the terminal voltage of the battery to decay from the first terminal voltage of the battery to the second terminal voltage of the battery and (ii) a rate of change of the terminal voltage of the battery after applying the at least one pulse of the charge signal to the terminals of the battery.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the rate of change of the terminal voltage in response to terminating the at least one pulse of the charge signal corresponds to the square root of time.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one pulse is a charge pulse and/or a discharge pulse.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein:

wherein the charge signal further includes a plurality of charge packets, wherein each charge packet includes at least one pulse, and

adapting one or more characteristics of the charge signal includes changing the amount of time between pulses of temporally successive charge packets of the plurality of charge packets.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein:

adapting one or more characteristics of the charge signal includes changing the amplitude and/or duration of the at least one pulse of a charge packet of the plurality of charge packets.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein:

applying a charge signal to the terminals of the battery further includes applying a plurality of charge packets, wherein each charge packet includes at least one charge pulse and at least one discharge pulse, and

adapting one or more characteristics of the charge signal further includes adapting the amplitude and/or pulse width of at least one charge pulse and/or at least one discharge pulse of each charge packet based on data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery.

14. An apparatus to adaptively charge a battery, wherein the battery includes at least two terminals, the apparatus comprising:

charge circuitry, coupled to the battery, to generate a charge signal and apply the charge signal to the terminals of the battery, wherein the charge signal includes at least one pulse;

measurement circuitry, coupled to the battery, to measure a terminal voltage of the battery which is a voltage between the terminals of the battery;

control circuitry, coupled to the measurement circuitry and charge circuitry, wherein the control circuitry is configured to:

monitor the terminal voltage of the battery after application of the at least one pulse of the charge signal to the terminals of the battery;

calculate data which is representative of an overpotential of the battery using first and second terminal voltages, wherein the overpotential of the battery corresponds to a voltage difference between a terminal voltage of the battery at a beginning or end of the at least one pulse of the charge signal and a terminal voltage of the battery when the terminal voltage of the battery is substantially constant in response to and after applying the at least one pulse of the charge signal to the terminals of the battery; and

generate one or more control signals using data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery to adapt one or more characteristics of the charge signal.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the first terminal voltage corresponds to the terminal voltage of the battery immediately before, at a beginning of or at an end of the at least one pulse of the charge signal.

16. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the second terminal voltage corresponds to a terminal voltage of the battery which is substantially constant after applying the at least one pulse to the terminals of the battery.

17. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the control circuitry calculates the terminal voltage of the battery when the terminal voltage of the battery is substantially constant after applying the at least one pulse of the charge signal to the terminals of the battery using the second terminal voltage and characteristics of a decay of the terminal voltage of the battery in response to applying the at least one pulse of the charge signal to the terminals of the battery.

18. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the at least one pulse is a charge pulse and/or a discharge pulse.

19. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the charge signal further includes a plurality of charge packets, wherein each charge packet includes at least one charge pulse and/or at least one discharge pulse, and wherein the control circuitry:

determines whether the overpotential of the battery is within a predetermined range and/or greater than a predetermined value, and

if the overpotential exceeds the predetermined range and/or is greater than the predetermined value, the control circuitry provides one or more control signals to the charge circuitry to responsively change one or more characteristics of the charge packets of the charge signal so that the overpotential of the battery due to subsequent charge packets is within the predetermined range and/or less than the predetermined value.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the predetermined range and/or the predetermined value dynamically change during charging of the battery in accordance with changes in a state of charge of the battery and/or a state of health of the battery.

21. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein:

the second terminal voltage is a value which is a predetermined percentage of the first terminal voltage, and

the control circuitry calculates data which is representative of an overpotential of the battery using (i) characteristics of a decay of the terminal voltage and (ii) an amount of time for the terminal voltage of the battery to decay to the second terminal voltage of the battery.

22. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein:

the control circuitry calculates data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery using (i) an amount of time for the terminal voltage of the battery to decay from the first terminal voltage of the battery to the second terminal voltage of the battery and (ii) a rate of change of the terminal voltage of the battery in response to terminating application of the at least one pulse of the charge signal, and

the rate of change of the terminal voltage of the battery in response to terminating the at least one pulse of the charge signal corresponds to the square root of time.

23. A method to adaptively charge a battery, wherein the battery includes at least two terminals, the method comprising:

applying a signal to the terminals of the battery;

applying a charge signal to the terminals of the battery wherein the charge signal includes a plurality of charge packets, wherein each charge packet includes at least one pulse;

measuring a terminal voltage of the battery, wherein the terminal voltage of the battery is a voltage at the terminals of the battery;

calculating data which is representative of a overpotential of the battery, wherein the overpotential is a voltage difference between (i) a terminal voltage of the battery immediately before, at a beginning of or at an end of the signal and (ii) a terminal voltage of the battery which is substantially constant after terminating application of the signal to the terminals of the battery; and

adapting one or more characteristics of the plurality of charge packets based on or using data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery.

24. The method of claim 23 further including:

determining whether the overpotential of the battery is within a predetermined range and/or greater than a predetermined value; and

adapting one or more characteristics of the plurality of charge packets further includes adapting one or more characteristics of the plurality of charge packets if the overpotential of the battery exceeds the predetermined range and/or is greater than the predetermined value.

25. The method of claim 24 wherein the predetermined range and/or the predetermined value dynamically change during charging of the battery in accordance with changes in a state of charge of the battery and/or a state of health of the battery.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein adapting one or more characteristics of the plurality of charge packets includes changing the amplitude and/or duration of at least one pulse of a charge packet of the plurality of charge packets.

27. The method of claim 23 wherein each charge packet includes at least one charge pulse and at least one discharge pulse, and wherein adapting one or more characteristics of the plurality of charge packets includes adapting the amplitude and/or pulse width of at least one charge pulse and/or at least one discharge pulse of each charge packet.

28. The method of claim 23 further including determining the terminal voltage of the battery which is substantially constant after terminating application of the signal using characteristics of a decay of the terminal voltage associated with battery in response to a signal.

29. The method of claim 23 further including monitoring the terminal voltage of the battery to determine when the terminal voltage is a value which is a predetermined percentage of the terminal voltage of the battery corresponding to immediately before, at a beginning of or at an end of the signal, and

calculating data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery further includes using (i) characteristics of a decay of the terminal voltage of the battery in response to the signal and (ii) an amount of time for the terminal voltage of the battery to decay from (a) the terminal voltage of the battery corresponding to immediately before, at a beginning of or at an end of the signal to (b) when the terminal voltage is the value.

30. The method of claim 23 wherein calculating data which is representative of the overpotential of the battery further includes using (i) an amount of time for the terminal voltage of the battery to decay from the terminal voltage of the battery corresponding to immediately before, at a beginning of or at an end of the signal to a second terminal voltage of the battery and (ii) a rate of change of the terminal voltage of the battery after terminating application of the signal to the terminals of the battery.
